This is not related to what you are asking but it relates to the Vermont Militia. My cousin has a large farm on the James River east of Richmond. (Evelynton in Charles City). When the Union forces were converging on Richmond, the Vermont Militia was camped in what is now his cornfield. We have been in there with metal detectors and found a ton of bullets. But the interesting stuff is that we occasionally will find dog tags. The time frame is when President Lincoln nationalized all the militias so they discarded their uniforms there for the new ones. We find buttons and beltbuckles too. Not many but we did get an article written about the dog tags because we found the descendants and returned the tags to them.
