G2G: My Great Grandmother Ellie Ann Cross has vanished, after 1900 Census, please help.

Question

I couldn't be sure who her parents were.where she was born, or how/when she died She seems to have just vanished, no burial for her, and My Grandmother Carrie Cross is now passed  Carrie,told us she was a full blooded Cherokee Indian. she was a steward, Then the family says Ellie left and some say she died. Her husband Daniel Joe Cross married Sallie in 1902. Sallie raised my grandmother.

Looking at your tree, there are several serious problems with this branch. For one, James Marion Stewart (1829-1918) of Sequatchie, Tennessee married Mary A. Kirklin, is a very different couple from Marion Stuart b. ca.1840 son of Daniel Stuart and Celia Adams. Your Marion married Elizabeth Canup. I'll get back later with sources and details, but it may just be best for me to join the Trusted List on a few of these profiles and help correct some of the conflated individuals and families.

 

BTW, it appears Ellie Anna died in 1901 and Daniel remarried to Sallie Cross (LNAB uncertain) in Mar. of 1902.

If you look carefully at the 1900 census above, Ellie Ann Cross was 22 years old in 1900, not 12 years old. She had been married to Daniel Cross for 7 years.

In the 1900 census for Daniel and Ellie Ann Cross, thier neighbors are Marion and Elizabeth Stuart.  Which are the names of Ellie's parents on her profile.  I believe these neigbors might be Ellie's family.  In this family's1880 cenus, there is a daughter listed as Anna.  She's a few years older than the age you have for Ellie Ann though.  And the parents birthplace is North Carolina.  But from looking at the siblings later census records, they thought their parents were born in Tennessee.  

I realize it's a different direction.  But your question indicated you weren't sure about Ellie Ann's origins.  And the mother Elizabeth Stuart's maiden name may have been Canup.  Does any of this sound familier?

Not sure how much good it will do as nothing is conclusive, but I find it interesting. Next door in household 48 is Milton & Elisabeth Stuart age 60 & 62. Both born in NC, been married 39 yrs (ca. 1861) and had 9 living children. 2 of those children John (1879) & Ace H (1874ish) were still living with them. Ace is married to a Catherine and has a daughter named Mintra. A quick search turned up a Roscoe Steward death index (1902-1957) in Polk County, parents Ace Stewart and Catherine Cross. So it leads to the thought, Marion and Elisabeth could be Ellie Ann's parents, John and Ace her brothers, and Catherine could likewise be Daniels sister...

Just a thought to pursue.

That was my train of thought also.  I understand it's inconclusve.  I just thought it might be worth looking into.  The surname Canup came from Asa Stewart's findagrave memorial and neighbors in census records.

Good find on the 1880 Census, I missed it because I searched Marions DOB as 1830-1845... he was listed as 51 DOB 1829 in 1880. Miracle how he only aged 10 yrs from then till 1900 ;-)... Haven't found Daniel yet, but I'd be willing to bet he has a sister named Catherine.

I found Daniel in 1880. Didn't see a sister Catherine.  But she's most likely related.  And it looks like she had a prior marriage to a McDougall.
