HBC and the competing NWC covered of course not just Manitoba but all of Rupert's Land, which extended into much of present-day North & NW USA.

Insights into the crucial role fur trading 's Red River Trails, including the Crow Wing Trail,  shaped the development of Manitoba are provided in Ledohowski E.M. (2003). "The Heritage Landscape of the Crow Wing Study Region of Southeastern Manitoba/ This study consists of fivepdfs as follows: Introduction (pdf 1); Settlement Groups (pdf 2), (pdf 3) & (pdf 4); and Infrastructure Development (pdf 5).

There is a great deal of information about early fur trade contracts in Quebec, Ontario and Michigan on the French Canadian Heritage Society of Michigan website, as well as a tremendous amount of general information as well. Check it out.
