A sense of family was instilled at an early age as some of my earliest memories are of accompanying my parents on Memorial Day as we took beautiful fresh-cut bouquets of seasonal flowers consisting of whatever was in bloom in Maine at that time, mostly tulips, daffodills, lilacs, apple blossoms and chokecherry blossoms, to the various gravesites, each visit a lesson in familial relationships. I heard the stories of how my early Holman grandparents came from Sutton, Massachusetts to Maine to settle what was once called Holmantown.
As a middle schooler, I had the wonderful experience of assisting the town librarian, Rachel Gates Kidder, as she recorded information from the gravestones of remote, old, sometimes overgrown cemeteries. I spent countless hours helping her clean and record the stones, clearing weeds and small trees from the gravesites.
A varied employment life experience taught me well how to record facts and how to "get in the weeds" to validate information, how to continue to search when most have given up. This proves invaluable when attempting to track down genealogical details. A love of reading leads me to finding odd bits of information as I read all sorts of books, reports, journals, etc.
I've learned that most of my work life involved basically following the footsteps of newly discovered family, often working in the exact neighborhoods where past grandparents lived in the 1700's, or learning of my connection to much studied historical events, not knowing my connection to the players of those events. Even a short work stint in Scotland took me to the exact spot where I now know an "umpteen" great grandfather lived.
Just one word to the wise, be fully prepared for the results of a DNA test as they can rock your world at a time when there are no elders left to provide answers. If you have any desire to learn about your family history, take the time to start early in your life when there are still people who can validate your findings. My one thing that I wish I could fix would be to advise users to be sure what they have for info is accurate and not to merge or attach source documents that simply have the same name, about the same date, etc., without ensuring it is the correct person. I cannot begin to guesstimate the amount of time I've spent untangling profiles of a person born and living in New England with a profile of a person of the same name living in England. And darn if I don't "get in the weeds" to correct all the info possible for those impacted so that my agenda is often thrown off course.
I'm always up for a trip to a cemetery or library to look for collaborating data.Featured Asian and Pacific Islander connections: Marjorie is 23 degrees from 今上 天皇, 21 degrees from Adrienne Clarkson, 24 degrees from Dwight Heine, 21 degrees from Dwayne Johnson, 18 degrees from Tupua Tamasese Lealofioaana, 23 degrees from Stacey Milbern, 16 degrees from Sono Osato, 31 degrees from 乾隆 愛新覺羅, 24 degrees from Ravi Shankar, 27 degrees from Taika Waititi, 22 degrees from Penny Wong and 18 degrees from Chang Bunker on our single family tree. It is exciting to find family members since I was severely isolated as a child and knew very, very little of my parents living or deceased relatives.
