Cool Ancestors

I have several interesting ancestors: Hendrik Baijens(e) of Nieuwaal (1630-1685) and his grandfather: Henrick Baijens of Lithoijen (1560-1625) and a far family member (6th cousin twice removed) Pieter Baijens (1845-1920) that moved to the USA in 1892.

"Wikitree - Connection Trees"

My Ancestor

Knights (Ridders): There are several Knights in my fathers-mothers (Opoe) ancestral line: Knight Eustachius (Staeske) van Brakel (born 1226) his grandson Knight Johan van Brakel (1350-1427) and Knight Reijwaert Jansz van Clootwijck (1470-1549) and also Knight Ghiselbertus Uten Goye (1200-1271) my 20th great grandfather.

My wife's Ancestors

New World Settlers: On my wife side of the family we have Orange Conner (1847-1927) from Western-New York and his ancestor from the Massachusets Bay Colony Cornelius Connor (1637-1687). He arrived at the new world, when it was still a British Colony in 1656.

My wife's ancestors

Mafia: My wife descended from Italian Mafia. In 1920 her grandpa Joseph d'Auria and his brother Michael d'Auria were arrested with other members of the Black Hand Society a branch of Italian Mafia. Michael had to do prison time with Vincenzo Disano nicknamed the "Squeeler". After his release, Vincenzo was murdered in 1922 shot in the back to keep him from testifying.

My Cousins Flag

Pirates: Through wikitree I found out that I am related to pirates Henry Mainwaring (1587-1653), Robert Glanfield (abt.1643-1702) and William Carkeet (abt.1660-abt.1720). They are my cousins. (14th-16th Cousin). I am also related to another pirate Otto Jansz van Thuijl (1661-1705). He is a pirate from Gameren.

My Cousin

Kings: There is also my cousin Richard Lionheart of England (1157-1199) (3rd cousin, 29 times removed) and from another family tree branch my Grandpa Widukind von Sachsen (0755-0810) (37th great grandfather).

My Grandpa (34th)

On my fathers-fathers (Opa) side of the family, I descended from Knight Daniel III van Ghoor (1315-1380). Daniels wife Catharina van IJsselstein descended on her fathers side from the van-Amstels. My grandpa Knight Gijsbrecht III van Amstel was the one who built the dam in the Amstel river, afterwards the town he ruled from was named Amsterdam. Catharina van IJsselstein descended from her mothers side from another one of my Grandpa's: Karel de Grote (aka Charlemagne Carolingian) (748-814 A.D.) (33th great grandfather).

My Grandpa (32nd)
Vikings: I am also a descendant of Rollo the Viking of Normandy (842-931 A.D.), he is my Grandpa (31st great grandfather). Then there is my other Grandpa the king that fought the vikings Æthelred (Wessex) of England (966-1016). (29th great grandfather).
My Ancestors

Crusaders: Duke Floris of Holland (1141-1190) is also in my ancestory. He participated in the third crusade. He was a distinguished leader, but died in Antioch of pestilence. My ancestors Henri de Champagne (1127-1181) and Étienne (Blois) of England (1092-1154) participated in the 2nd crusade. My ancestors Hugues (Capet) de Vermandois (1057-1102) and Étienne-Henri (Blois) de Blois (abt.1052-1102) participated in the 1st crusade. Jacques (Avesnes) d'Avesnes (1152-1191) participated in 3rd Crusade. Baudoin (Hainaut) Constantinople (1171-1205) in the 4th crusade. Graaf Willem (Holland) van Holland (bef.1168-1222) in the 5th crusade.

Maybe Ancestor

Maybe an Ancestor

There are family trees on the web stating, that I descended from Knight Otto van Haeften. They claim that Ghijsbert Otten van Brakel (1521-1591) (my ancestor) was a son of (possibility 1) Otto van Brakel, son of Johan van Brakel and Lijsbeth van Haeften (daughter of Otto van Haeften). However more likely Ghijsbert's father was (possibility 2) Ott Jans van Brakel, son of Johan van Brakel (de Oude) and Jonkvrouw Agnes.

Not my Ancestor

Not an Ancestor

According to some family trees out there on other websites, I descended from Crusader Daniel van Merwede (1120-1172), however this appears to be incorrect. My ancestor named Adriaan Jan Arntsz van Clootwijck (1390-1465) bought the van-Clootwijck estate in 1418 and took on the name van-Clootwijck afterwards, but he did not descend from the older van-Clootwijcks who are descendeds from Daniel van Merwede. Daniel van Merwede may even be more legend than fact.

Not Ancestors

There are family trees on the web saying I descended from Arend van Herlaer (abt.1390-abt.1448) or his son Arent van Herlaer (abt.1410-1473) (many confuse the two). After some searching I figured we were not connected. Than after some more searching I did resolve the issues and found the sources and we linked. But I kept on looking at this ancestory line and eventually I concluded they are not my ancstors. I am still cousins with Arent van Herlaer (1410-1473) through his mother Lijsbeth van Brakel.

There are also family trees stating I descended from Crusader Raynald Châtillon (1125-1187) via Rudolf I de Cock (1220-1270) viaOtto van Haeften (1360-1430) . The story goes that the king of France name-called Rudolf a rooster "coq" and chased him out of france. He kept the name Cock and settled in Gelderland. However the story is from a 1715 de Cock-Châtillon family tree that is probably more legend than fact , as we don't find any referrals to this story or france origins in the original records of Rudolf. The only thing in common is that Châtillon and de-Cock use the same coat of arms. Also Otto van Haeften is not a direct descend of Rudolf de Cock. This lineage is presented in the Nederlands Adelboek, but there is no mention of many of the characters of this lineage in orginal records, so it appears to be a fake as well.

Ancestor

Finally there are family trees stating I descended from Knight Heymans van Rijswijk (1235-1300). This is also incorrect, however I do descended from Gelymmer Jansz van Rijswijck (1375-1441). Glimmer Jansz took on the name van-Rijswijck when he bought the Rijswijck estate in 1436. So he did not descend from Heyman van Rijswijck, who owned Rijswijck before him (as far as we know).

Hans I sent the wrong link in the email, This one you can use for many profiles I think: https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/onderzoeken/index/nt00332/88f3a060-7102-102d-a428-005056a23d00 Courtcase Thomas Walraven van Arkel.

Long lists, some verry borring, but some of the court cases are really funny.

Hi Hans,

I just noticed a merge you did where the LNAB went from "van Something" to "Van Something." I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure I just read the other day that the "van" should be lower case. Just wanted to be sure you are up on the current Netherlands Project naming protocols. Cheers!

You are correct that "van" should be smaller case. I am trying to clean up some medieval profiles. Do you remember the profile? I am looking back and I think I may have already corrected it (?).

It was Van_Renesse-29. I think you're right, you did, but for whatever reason the profile ID looks like not. Thanks for getting back to me!

Hi Hans,

We're so happy to see you are still active on WikiTree and caring about the Dutch profiles. The Dutch Roots Project is looking forward to give the project a new fresh start to put the Dutch in a more prominent place on the WikiTree map. The project is currently managing over 50,000 profiles and the total number of Dutch profiles on WikiTree exceeds 500,000! Within the project we are monitoring the quality of the Dutch profiles and assisting other WikiTreers in producing those profiles. We would love to pick up some other tasks but to do so we need more volunteers. This is why we check in with the members of the DRP to see if you would like to help us expand.

1) Would you like to do some volunteer work for the Dutch Roots Project? 2) If yes, what kind of work would you prefer to do within the Dutch Roots Project? E.g. translating, sourcing, or something else you want to work on?

We hope for a positive reaction but please don't feel obliged to volunteer. We just want to have a group of persons we can ask to help us with certain activities

Kind regards,

Jan, on behalf of the Dutch Roots Project

Jan, thanks for the invite to help out. I can help with sourcing. I see there are about 37,000 unsourced dutch profiles. Ouch. Most are probably ugly gedcom profiles. I can also translate if members need help with this. I do have questions about the DRP. Some of the guidance is a bit confusing to me. Where do you want me to start w sourcing? I will probably want to focus on people from Gelderland, N-Brabant, Zeeland and Rotterdam as I am familair with their archives.

Hans,

Thank you so much for your speedy and positive reaction! We are currently composing a list with all areas of interest as indicated by the respondents. I guess we can put you on the list for Sourcing with focus Gelderland, Noord-Brabant, Zeeland, Rotterdam. Soon as we have processed all reactions we hope to get back to you all withe proposals for specific activities.

Thank you again!

Hello Hans,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are usually shared by many descendants, collaborating with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or topic. Review the project pages to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Can't find what you're looking for? Let me know, and I can make some suggestions! :-)

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Beste Hans,

Mijn oudste voorvader is Henrick Baijens.

Hi Mr Baijense

Thank you for adding a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree it generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through either accepting or rejecting suggested matches, once that has been done, you add any remaining names manually.

The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, let us know by using the "reply" link under our comments, or by clicking our names to visit our profiles. From there, you can leave a comment, or send a private message.

Once I process the Gedcom. Will family members that are still alive be automatically hidden or deleted? Or should I make sure they don't get processed with the gedcom?
