Sue (Smith) Knifley is a member of the US Civil War: War Between the States Project.

I have lived in Kentucky all of my life except for about 2 years when my husband was stationed at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach.

I am a retired accountant, who fell in love with researching my ancestors while helping my daughter with a school project. With the help of other local genealogists, I had researched my lines back to when they migrated into Kentucky after the Revolutionary War.

In 2019, I took a DNA test which was a game changer for my research. I met a cousin who was a member of the Jamestown Society. He shared his research with me and lead me to my gateway ancestor, George Reade. I was also able to break down one of my Smith brick walls that tied my to another of the gateway ancestors.

Research Interests

  • My research interest is mainly in Central Kentucky. I am currently working on adding profiles for the cemeteries in Taylor and Adair counties especially
    • Palestine Cemetery in Taylor County where many of my ancestors are buried. (240 of 480 profile have been added).
    • Roley Cemetery in Adair County, where my husband's ancestors were buried. (182 of 478 profiles added).
  • Working on adding profiles from the 1850 Taylor County, Kentucky census and identifying those who were slave owners.
  • Working with the Appalachian Project to add profiles for my research counties

Ancestors

  • My ancestors settled in the Central Kentucky region soon after the Revolutionary War. They migrated to Kentucky from Virginia and Maryland.

Hello Sue,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing a check-in. The Project operates in a team structure with these participant PIP Teams -- The Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and three Biography Teams. There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.

You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team, working on profiles from your watchlist and other profiles that interest you. The other two Biography Teams work on Abandoned and Popular profiles from the provided lists. Please let us know if you are content with your current Team or would like to change to one of the others.

If you have not already done so, we invite you to join the email GoogleGroup. We use the WikiTree Discord server #profile-improvement channel for our project. Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project meet its goals. We would like to hear about the successes you’ve had and would also appreciate any feedback you have to help improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or via private message to one of us.

Hi Sue, I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a marvelous New Year.

The Annual US Civil War January Challenge is to connect US Civil War Soldiers for the January Connect-a-Thon. This year will be a twist of what I usually do. Instead of you choosing a "Surname Letter", you will be choosing from a block of soldiers whom I've already screened that show they have family to connect. Each soldier has a connection to one or more of his immediate family--parents, siblings, spouses, children, on their profile. Whether you work on one soldier or your whole block of soldiers, it's one step closer in our goal to connect each of our US Civil War Soldiers. The goal is to make sure all these soldiers are connected at least by one or two degrees. You can sign up now by clicking this link: US Civil War Sign-up Chart

Hi Sue - you and I connected a couple of years ago as you and I are DNA matches on AncestryDNA. I am still stumped on how you and I are related. I saw that you recently updated as Bass profile. Do you also descend from Basses?
posted by Jim Bass Jr.
No, I am not a descendant of any Bass as far as I know. I have been working on profiles that were residents in Taylor County in 1850 which is where most of my ancestors settled.. There is an area of Taylor County along the Marion or Casey County line called Bass Ridge so I may run across some others.

I am like you; completely stumped where our connection is and I am just as far from finding the parents of my brick wall as ever. Glad you are here, we may one day find the connection.

Hi Sue!

Thanks for signing up to be on Team Virginia for the 2021 Source-A-Thon. Mark your calendar for October 1st through the October 4th. On our Team Page, we will provide a list of Unsourced Profiles for you source or you may work on any existing Profile within WikiTree.

A few tips to get you prepared for the Thon:

  1. Join Discord, if you have not already. It is a lot of fun to talk to other team members and get quick answers to questions via Discord.
  2. Look at your "suggestions" which is also known as your errors report. Many listed Profiles are probably not managed by you but clearing the errors gives you a sense of how easy errors can occur ... and how easy to clean them. :)

If I can help in any way, please let me know!

Hello Sue,

Thanks for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Collaboration with Pre-1700 Project members is essential for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because those ancestors are usually shared by many descendants.

It looks like the United States Project would be a good fit based on your branch of WikiTree. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles that you manage or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Ginny ~ Pre-1700 Greeter

Thank you for suggesting the United States Project. I have looked at several that I am interested in but wasn't sure if I was ready to dive into them just yet. I met a cousin through a DNA match that is a member of the Jamestown Society and he was helping me but I have one link that so far I can not prove to get back to our common ancestors. Our ggg grandmother's were sisters, but the proof needed to show that my ancestor is a daughter has not been found yet. So I am very interested in learning more about searching for reliable sources.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. You'll learn about most of these things while you're on the Voyage.

One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.

If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

Let me or your Guide know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources; find or merge duplicates; clean up GEDCOM or merged biographies; or interpret the Suggestions report. We're here to help!

I am enjoying WikiTree. i have used the new member pages and the help index quite a bit. I think I have only scratched the surface of what there is to learn about the site. I like that it is really getting me to examine all the source documents much more closely. I started almost 30 years ago when you had to make a trip to the courthouse or library to search and I didn't understand a lot about citing sources. So starting here is giving me a chance to go back to the beginning and really examine what I have and what I may still need to find.

Welcome Sue!

Thank you for upgrading. We are so happy to have you here in the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration. Don't be afraid to ask questions in our G2G forum and get involved as much or as little as works for you. Be sure to check out the tabs at the very top right hand side of your profile, there is lots to discover!

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do!

I hope this helps! If you have any problems, let me know.

Happy tree climbing
