Some weeks it's tough to find an image.  But this week it's easier. My Miller grandfather and his brother were professional musicians.  My uncle and my father played many instruments.  I selected this photo as it shows so many things. This is my father John Russell Miller with his flute. He's wearing his band uniform.  The photo is taken outdoors so you can see the city street of Kingston, Ontario, Canada (located on the eastern side of Lake Ontario). You can also see the way they colorized black and white photos in 1939 (not as well as they do today).  Dad's best instrument was the piano.  He played every day when I was growing up.  He substituted for the organist at church.  But he was good on flute too.  DNA?  I didn't inherit anything more than a love of certain songs and music.

Pat, thank you for sharing your certainty interesting photo of your talented father. You are so right about it having so many interesting things. I am especially fascinated by the amount of colorization that it has. The few photos that I have that have been colorizes are lightly colored.

Also, all the women in my family were good pianist—except for me.
Thank you, Alexis, and that's interesting what you wrote, that there were photos from that time that were lightly colored.  I had thought the heavy saturation was the style of the period.  Now it might instead be a botched job, ha ha.

And your comment about pianists in your family played out the same way for my musical grandfather's 4 children: 2 sons and 1 daughter, very musical, the other daughter, no ability.
Pat--Your photo caught my eye right away since I too am a flutist.  Looking at his uniform, I was wondering what ensemble he played with.  Do you know?  It looks like he's wearing a cape which would be cumbersome, though not impossible, when playing the flute.  Thanks for sharing!
Gorgeous photo Pat wow thank you so sharing this
Yes, Betsy, I remembered that you played.  There was a photo you posted.  I thought this photo was at Kingston University because a small black & white version is in that section of Dad's photo album.  But the school had many activities with students dressing in costumes and uniforms and you make a good point.  Some of this "finery" makes it more difficult for the person to perform.  As to the name of the band, I don't know but it was probably some University club that played at events.

This is a photo taken in Dec 1954 of my aunt Marietta and my uncle Scott Marvin. Marietta had many talents, but she was mainly known for her musical ability. She was so gifted that my maternal grandmother often said that Marietta could have been a concert pianist. She and my uncle were very much in love from the day they met, and she was content to give piano lessons in her home and play the organ and piano at her church.

This photo was taken in her mother's home in front of the piano that she had played as a child.

Your Aunt Marietta was also a very beautiful woman.  It's a lovely photo, Alexis.
Pat, thank you for your lovely comment about Marietta. She was as sweet as she was beautiful. She gave me many things that she knitted, and I still wear two vests that she made. She was extremely talented.
Thank you Alexis for sharing this wonderful photo of your aunt Marietta and uncle Scott
Susan, thank you for your sweet comment. They are the parents of my first cousin, Carolyn. She always loved to see the photos each week. I thought about quitting the challenges after she died, but now I feel she would want me to keep adding photos—especially this one.

My grandmother, Eileen, is on the left. A family friend, Lois, is on the right. In the middle is Roy Clark. Somehow my grandparents became friends with Roy, and he would come to the farm to hunt pheasant. This was backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in December 1972. I wish he would have taught me to play guitar. laugh

John, thank you for sharing such a great fun photo. Roy Clark sure looks young.

Well this is a change, John, a celebrity photo, with your grandmother and they all look happy to be there.  Thanks for sharing. smiley

Thanks for your kind comments, ladies! I remember seeing this picture when I was a kid, and figured it got lost over the years. I was so happy when I found it!
John, over the years I have, more and more, come to appreciate Roy Clark's abilities as a guitar player and a performer......it is great that you were able to feature him here, along with Eileen and Lois.
Thanks John! He was underappreciated in his time, that's for sure!
Thank you John for sharing this great photo with your grandmother and a family friend
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Susan! Thanks for your kind comment!
Your grandmother has a beautiful name!
Thanks Eileen!! As do you!

Her first name was actually Mildred but everyone in the whole world knew better than calling her by that, even as a joke. She was only 4'11", but she was sassy!
I can relate well to that. 5' 5" with short arms and long legs.

Mildred Eileen was fabulous.

My cousin "Tori" Victoria Thompson (Rex's younger sister), right side middle, in the musical, A MIDSUMMER-NIGHT'S DREAM, by William Shakespeare, at the King-Coit Children's Theatre, New York City, in April, 1958.

John, thank you for sharing such a beautiful photo. I wish I could have seen this in 1958–I would have loved it.
John, this photo is so charming and sweet.  Any chance you know whose music would have accompanied this production?
Amazing photo really amazing thank you for sharing
Alexis, Tori's family lived in Greenwich Village and her father was a stage actor on Broadway.....and it would be great to be able to go back in time........

Betsy......Orchestra, conducted by Frank Lewin * Violin, Otto Frohn * Viola, Grete Hirsch * Cello, Sam Reiner * Flute, Kenneth Schmidt * Harp, Laura Newell *  PS  I recently discovered, on WikiTree, that I have Ross-Lewin ancestors in Ireland, but do not know of any connections to Frank Lewin.     Ahha.....I looked up Frank Lewin and immediately found him on Wikipedia......then it all came back.....I'd done it before!  surprise

Thankyou Susan, this photo saved my day, when I didn't have any photos of my mother playing the piano, or of Kathy playing her flute.

John, it would have been the highlight of my life to have been able to go to New York then. I remember being fascinated with New York as a teenager, but I never got there until I was 45. wink

Alexis, back in '55 New York was far off, the other side of the continent, so some of NY was sent to me by Rex's father, a toy Staten Island Ferry and clothes with Saks 5th Ave labels, all in a big box......now I roam it by computer, although not like your, in person, experience.
John, like you, I have had family in theater there. My father’s first cousin was an actress in New York. Her niece, my second cousin, is still an actress there. You have inspired me to improve their profiles.

I don't have a picture anyone in my family actually making music. (I wish I had one of great-aunt Irene playing her ukelele, or one of my son playing his jug band instrument, which he made out of a beer can and a rubber band.) Instead,  here's a picture I took at the Independence Day parade last summer.

by Joyce Vander Bogart G2G6 Pilot (198k points)
It's a fun photo that you've shared, Joyce.  I have your same wish. I searched for a photo of my father playing the piano but instead have photos of the piano or him sitting beside the piano with a cat in his lap.  I'll keep looking.  But memo to younger generations, always photograph your musical family member playing the instrument.

Here I am conducting the band at the high school where I teach.  I grew up playing in orchestras, but have come to appreciate and love all the wonderful band literature that exists.  Hopefully my students graduate with at least one band piece/performance that they hold special in their heart.

Wonderful, Betsy.  You're creating memories that will last a lifetime for many of your students.
Outside of sports, band was my favorite activity in HS. In 1983, the summer of my graduation, we were invited to the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna. Playing a concert in the Vienna State Opera is something I'll never forget. Thanks for being a teacher!
Betsy, thank you for sharing such a great photo. I am very such that you are a wonderful music teacher, and you are making memories they will hold in their hearts throughout their lives.
Betsy, you were excellent doing the photos on the Livecast, and thank you for adding the link.
Thank you so much, Alexis.  It was nice to know you were watching!
Thanks, John.  School music tours are such a special experience.  We were due to take our first such trip to Nashville in April 2020 but, as you can imagine, that didn't happen.

I loved the photo of your grandmother and Roy Clark!
Thanks Betsy! I hope you get to take your kids on a tour soon, because they are a lot of fun and a great learning experience!

My paternal grandfather played fiddle and won a few local fiddle-playing contests. He would also play at family gatherings. Unfortunately I don't know when this photo was taken, perhaps in the late 1940s or early 50s. I am thankful that I still have his fiddle.

by Mark Williams G2G6 Pilot (355k points)
Mark, your photo encouraged me to, once again, look up fiddle and violin.....my interests are in listening rather than playing.
Technically I don't think there's a difference in the instrument. It's more in the style of playing.
I agree, Mark......Some songs I listen to, with headphones, wouldn't be the same without the violin accompaniment, in another a fiddle seems to be able to talk to me, or carry so much feeling.

So...

This picture is almost 5 years old. This is from my wedding in Rochester, Minnesota. I'm surrounded by a musically talented family which is comforting to me! Majority of us are singers, pianists and one brother in law is a harp player. The youngest is now 5 years old learning how to sing like the rest of us!
