I have a neighbor who's out there every day with the leafblower... his driveway is spotless.  We once had the town called on us when we let the front get a bit out of hand (you could have lost our toddler in the grass!).  There was a house for sale up the street and I suspect the realtor called us in.  Recently we decided that time was more important than $$ and signed up for a yard service, just to mow.

Unsuspecting and uninformed me moved from the 'burbs' to 'cow town' about ten years ago. Faithfully mowing every week in the summer, I noticed that the neighbors would rudely let their grass grow. They were so lazy, they wouldn't mow it for MONTHS!! I was steaming mad but polite and didn't scold them for their sloth. One day as I was mowing on my little John Deere lawn tractor I see a giant combine machine come in and harvest the hay for the cows. THAT was embarrassing!

        NATIONAL TURKEY NECK SOUP DAY

National Turkey Neck Soup Day is observed annually on March 30th.   The neck of a turkey makes flavorful soup and a homemade stock. Often called a bone soup, seasonings, vegetables and noodles can be added as well.  

Here are today’s five thing to know about Turkey Neck Soup:

1. The turkey is named “Tom”, because Ben Franklin always teased “Tom” Jefferson for not picking the turkey as the national bird
2. The turkey was never a staple for native Americans because they were seen as weak.  They were only eaten in times of famine.
3. Turkey chicks have a tendency to drown on rainwater.  They become curious about the phenomenon above their heads, and look until they drown.
4. “Legend has it” in the 1800’s they cross-bred turkey and chicken into “turken”.
5. All major documents signed in the founding of the United States used the quill (feather) of a turkey for their signing.

An old American way to celebrate the end of Winter and the promise of Spring. Turkey Neck Soup is pretty much what it says – a soup whose stock is made from turkey necks. The tough neck meat helps make soups richer.

We got all the vegetables that need to be started from seed planted this week and potted up a lot of what were planted a couple weeks ago. Now on  to the flowers and fill plants. We use herbs as fill plants in both the veggie and flower beds. 

On the WT front, been doing some work on Canada profiles. Found some children for one former Prime Minister. I did remove an extra husband from one of my ancestors (4 were enough) and had some discussions with cousins about the need to merge a couple of profiles and remove incorrect parents. Haven't initiated that yet. Also heard a bit from the planning committee on our family reunion. The actual event isn't really a reunion but so many reunions happen that that is what it is for a lot of us. The official go/no-go decision is in a couple weeks but looks like it is a go (they have the funds necessary). Then I'll start trying to get my first cousins interested.

3 days is pretty fast. Parsley and zaatar are the slowest for us. It can take a week or more but right now parsley is the last of the veggies. Do you use a heat mat to start? That speeds things up for seeds that want warm. Interesting music. My wife said it would probably kill her seeds since she really didn't like it. We're going to plant extra basil this year. A recent episode of the Great British Baking Show we decided we need to let a lot go to seed.

I’m going to answer my own posting!

Today, hauling limbs to the back of the property to be burned. If y’all remember, we had a LOT of trees down this winter due to wet snow and heavy rains. Some of the trees fell by the root, others snapped in half. Everyone one of these fell from vacant property next to ours. So, today, after hauling of what I’d done before, I worked in some more fallen stuff, cutting the smaller branches off to burn and saving the rest of the tree (or half-tree) for fire wood. I’m tired and my shoulder is killing me, but it’s gotta get done!

Last night I began working in an unrelated family in Branscombe Parish, Devonshire, late 1500s to early 1600s. Got the parents and children in and am now hunting down the grandchildren. I needed a break from my own family and other WikiTree duties.

This is what I like at WikiTree: When you are sick of your own family, you can easily switch to a completely new family, learn new stuff and get your brain cleaned out. And then when you have new energy, you can turn to your own family again

Those kinds of fixes can be quite satisfying.

I need to do more yard work but it rained yesterday and turned to snow overnight. The snow is gone (it hit 40F/5C) today but everything is very wet and digging in heavy, wet clay is not easy. Enjoy the yardwork.

I helped my parents clear leaves from inside and outside of the garden and took care of  several branches. Probably a bad sign when a wheelbarrow wheel squeaks all the time. Need a new one. We also brought in the reflectors we use for snow plows and trimmed a few branches off of a tree.

A lot of the leaves and stuff were semi frozen. Not too bad.

And yea. It was satisfying. I don't know why I didn't see it before. Something didn't smell right when someone was born in Concord, NH married a dude born in Andover, Mass. It can happen now. But, not so much in the 1600s. Unless they had some REALLY fast horses!

Nice to have a connection in the town where I went to college at least. =)

Well, I'm a bit late, but since we were celebrating Vietnam Veterans day, I guess I should mention I'm one and got a Silver Star (Though it was basically just for doing what I was supposed to do.)

Weather: warm but nothing unusual for this time of year in the Phoenix area.

I've been taking it easy the last few days and just reading information in the help lists.  And looking for what else can be found.  I did search for the Mayflower connections and found a couple of Hopkins who are direct ancestors of me and another 6 people who are Cousin's of mine. I know that there was some leeway on what information needs to be available to turn unknown confidence to confident. In part I'd like to use the books of the first 5 generations of Mayflower descendents as enough to make the change, but I'd like the opinion of people who know the ins and outs.

10 days into spring and it has snowed here in Canada!!! It's not heavy - at least not down at the Ontario Lakeshore - but that is definitely snow I am seeing on the ground outside my window!!

Genealogy wise, nothing much all week, until last night and then I discover that all the cemetery links of rmy parents home town have been changed and I have tons of relatives from Dunedin, NZ.

So now I have to go and refind everyones burial records, and relink them on everyones profiles!!! Not forgetting some Notables whose family members were also buried in Dunedin as well.

Yesterday it was near 60 degrees and raining, This morning I looked out the window to several inches of that darned white stuff and 27 degrees. Is it time to crawl back into bed? I was told to put the snow thrower away a couple of days ago and I said "No you never put that stuff away until after the Maple Festival and that is not until the last weekend in April." I was right. They could move the Maple Festival to August 1st and we could still get snow around here. It is going to be a long day. I did not get to any genealogy yesterday. The laptop from my grandson is becoming a bigger project than I first thought. The base OS is Chromium, a Linux based OS, and they added Windows 10 on top. No wonder he was having problems. I have to manually remove programs one by one and that sometimes causes the computer to lock up, so I start over taking a different direction. It is working but this way is much more time consuming so it may be a while before I get that back to decent working condition. I am hopeful that I can get some genealogy done today because my family activity feed is only others adding categories or edit bot changing stuff and no actual genealogy is getting done.

Well I am in the process of switching over to a different computer. The display on my old laptop started to go bad and even Dee said it was dying. The good news is I have my grandsons old machine. The bad news is it is going to be a lot of work removing his games and adding what I use instead but I am working on it. This computer has a bigger screen and a bigger keyboard. The screen helps with my eyesight but the keyboard is going to take some time to get used to, bigger is not always better.

Been a busy weekend, and I finally just remembered to check in here!  Hope everyone's weekend has been going well.  Friends are saying that the wood frogs are up and calling, so I'm itching to get out into the woods.  (Unfortunately my field sites this year are more marsh than woods...)

The only Wikitreeing I've done this week was a group of merges, which reminded me that apparently I have a bunch of profiles I made early on that still need proper sourcing.  (Drat, I thought I'd gotten them all.)  And yesterday I got my brother's Y-DNA results, so I've been trying to make sense of that.  He has just one Y-37 match (distance of 1), and it's not a Hazard.  My Hazard line immigrated from England in the mid 1600s, and this person's paternal line immigrated from Ireland in the mid 1800s.  So either our shared ancestor is pre-1600 or there's something funny going on.  Time to dig a little deeper!  (Because it's that or grade these essay exams...)

I just started a personal project of adding the members inducted into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame. I do not expect this to grow into an actual project and have no actual reason for doing this, except it seems like a good Idea. There are at least 2 profiles on WikiTree so far for those members but there is no category that I know of for them. One is the profile I just started, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Armstrong-14527 , and the other I know about is one of the people who were involved in the killing of Bonnie and Clyde. I am not actually asking for help at this time but if this interests you feel free to dive in.

There is a category for Texas Rangers but not for the Hall of Fame members and the two profiles for the Hall of Fame members are not listed in the category I found, go figure.

Hi to all my chat people!  Sorry I have not checked in for a while - been busy with taxes!  Finally feeling about 85% after that terrible week of the flu - oh I was miserable and really stupid too - could not think right - went back to work this week and so that is good - all the kids showed up yesterday and just slept in this morning as that wore me out having all four kids, the three significant others and the two little grandkids over - my son came first and he went with me to pick up the teenager that still lives at home - then he and my husband worked for quite a while on their car - dang drivers seat was stuck all the way forward and they finally got it to move after taking it out and putting it back in.  Then the middle daughter arrived and the oldest with those cute little grands came almost the same time - we had way too much food and it was a very nice visit.  I have now got to get back on my family work here at wikitree - had some help with Scrip records for some of my Canadian - well before it was Canada really people and so I need to look at those and add them to profiles and finish some of my Swans - no relation that I adopted and set things up better in my Rowley One Place study - hope all are well and fine going into the spring - we had thought maybe we would never get spring here in the upper midwest - down to 22 last night so still chilli nights but nice days and melting and flooding all around

National Clams on the Half Shell Day is observed each year on March 31. This food holiday is a day for the clam lovers to enjoy a unique dish.

The best variety of hardshell clams (also called Quahogs) for serving on the half-shell is the topneck, but you will find recipes using littlenecks and cherrystone as well. The topnecks run about two inches across, and the meaty clam is enough for a bite-sized morsel of Atlantic saltwater goodness.

Clams on the half shell can be raw, steamed, grilled or even smoked.

One popular “on the half shell” recipe originated in Rhode Island.  Often served as an appetizer, Clams Casino is a dish with toasted breadcrumbs and bacon.  Legend has it the recipe for Clam Casino dates back to 1917 and the Little Casino in Narragansett, Rhode Island.  According to Good Housekeeping Great American Classics, maître d’hôtel Julius Keller and Mrs. Paran Stevens developed clams casino for her guests, as she wanted to serve up something special and named it after the hotel.  The dish soon became so successful, word spread, and it began appearing on menus across the nation.

HISTORY

To celebrate this day, let’s take a short history lesson on clams. The formal term for clams is bivalve molluscs, but clams is much easier to say and shorter! Clams first were found over 510 million years ago. Clams can live in freshwater or marine habitats and their size ranges from so tiny that they are useless to try to eat all the way to 440 pounds like the giant clam! Some live to around one year while the oldest clam discovered was possibly over 500 years old.

Clams are made up of two valves that are connected by a hinge joint and a ligament. The ligament can be internal or external and provides tension to bring the valves apart. Many do not know that clams actually have kidneys, a heart, a stomach, a nervous system, and an anus.

TIPS

Ready to shuck the clams? We have some tips for you before you begin. First make sure to scrub the clams clean, because no one wants to eat a dirty clam! Also please make sure you use a proper clam knife (these are different from oyster knives). Open your clams over a bowl for a smaller mess in your kitchen! Another tip is to not tap on them as they will tighten their shells and make it hard for you to open up.

Start by nestling the clam with the hinge set in the crook between your thumb and index finger. Stick the edge of the shucking knife into the lip and push the knife with your fingers. Twist the knife to pry open the shell, this will break the first muscle. Use your fingers to prop open the shell and slip the tip of the knife along the top of the shell to detach the muscles. Slide the knife along the bottom of the shell to further loosen the clam. And there you have it, you have shucked a clam!

Clams can be eaten raw, steamed, boiled, baked, or fried. So which are you going to try today?

Btw, finally I have again my 6 hours time difference to the US East Coast and 9 to the Pacific. We switched today to DST. I hate those weeks when US is switched but we in the EU not yet. I am so used to the 6/9 hours and all in between that I really can't stand this one hour less....

I always seem to be so busy on the weekends and then spot the weekend chat once it is closed. I swear, I'd be 2 days late for my own funeral. So much to do, so little inclination. To top it off, it is raining and temperatures are going up and down. That generally means being sick. On top of that it means mud and minor flooding. Oh boy, Oh joy.

On the lighter side, I am about set for the Clean-a-thon except for straggling crew members. If any team wants a spreadsheet page, feel free to hit me up. Sunday evening and I am trying to make some WT progress. Sent a PM this morning and will send one to a different person tonight or tomorrow. I really wish people would take a bit of care when adding parents to profiles. Of course, this is actually on a duplicate where the merge has been rejected a couple of times. One set of parents was speculated on about 25 years ago and later rejected when a will was found that disproved the parentage. The other set of parents is pretty strange and looks like someone confused the report of a DNA study. The whole logistics can't work (requires going back and forth across the Atlantic (Ireland->New York->Ireland->New Foundland->PEI) over only a couple years timeframe before 1790. These weren't wealthy families. This is another duplicate as well.

Sorry, just venting a bit.
