Edward III Project: Gateway Ancestors - do you have one? (Round 3)

Gateway Descendants from Edward III
Round 1 Round 2

This is round three of an old G2G question.  Round one is here and two is here.  The idea here is to find new gateway ancestors.  If your ancestor already appears on the list below there is no need post the line.

Below is a list of 17th century new world immigrants with a recognized descent from Edward III, king of England. The list was kindly provided by Douglas Richardson, author of the Royal Ancestry series.  Links to all of them can be found on this page.

This list currently is 70 individuals representing 55 different families. Of the 70 individuals, 32 settled in the Southern Colonies, 27 in the New England Colonies, and 11 were part of the Quaker migration to the Middle Colonies.

Use the Relationship Finder to find if you have a direct connection to Edward III, king of England (Plantagenet-70). Does your gateway ancestor appear below?  If not, we will work to prove or disprove your connection.

Do you have a gateway ancestor from a population group other than American colonial immigrants (e.g. Australian, South African, European, etc.)? Post them here or in a separate G2G post and we will create new categories and new lists to track them. The line must be very well documented.

The List of 17th Century New World Immigrants

I think I finally figured out why I get all of the emails regarding replies to this Gateway posting...my response to your original post (well- part 3 of the original) must've been timed and positioned so that it is being "answered" by replies instead of your post...either way, I find it highly commendable you are still spending time checking the thread, answering requests and offering not only to check for gateway ancestor(s) but to do the work on the necessary profiles for provenance- as opposed to pointing out who you've deduced is the likely candidate and suggesting profiles are more defined.

Numerous emails from this thread have gone directly to my inbox but for some reason I opened this one and your reply lead me to check for a forgotten post that would elicit the reply- but instead of only complimenting everyone's tenacity; I am a bit inspired to offer any assistance with profiles you can think of that need sources or perhaps a better bio etc. I spend a lot of time on here but am not an expert by any means, thus my reply to help anyone looking for certain links or source suggestions to lessen the workload for this very ambitious but somehow achievable goal. I know I would've been overwhelmed a year ago somewhere between ability to complete the work and the fortitude to plow through the onslaught of replies, my own included somewhere, without becoming overwhelmed or distracted). I realize this is a long expression of acknowledgement and gratitude but I want to make sure I properly thank those helping pave the way for me to learn about my biological family and continue to offer to pay it forward; rather than complain about mistakes or time spent on merging profiles etc as I caught myself doing recently and didn't like it.

 Cheers!

Thanks so much for getting back so promptly. Have another direct (confident) connection to Edward making him my 19th Great Grandfather through my paternal Grandmother Sue Howard. It goes through the Ralph Neville Neville-144 line via his daughter Cecilia, Neville-1904.... her G-G Grandson Stephen, Terry-637 being the Gateway ancestor of my Grandmother Sue Howard, Howard-22533. Amazing dedication on your part working on this project!! Much appreciated. Margaret Mc Nutt-944
@ Becky - you didn't ask, but...

If you find that you'd rather not receive e-mail about a G2G post that you answered or commented on, you can "opt out" by editing your post(s) to the G2G question and unchecking the box "Email me... if a comment is added after mine".
Hi Liz- I apologize as I was exhausted and often don't realize how much I've written because phone screens are so much smaller than other devices...but everything was written with comete respect and total honesty...just used the emails as my gateway (no pun intended?)for sending the message out there.

    Happy Monday!

        Becky Elizabeth

 P. S. - Thanks for the info though as I will use it for something but I like seeing some of the connections and being reminded to work on certain lines here :)
Hi Joe, have you already looked at Elizabeth Green(e) ?

Compare:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Roundy-190
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bennett-6674
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Greene-2278

This may be an error in my research. Something is fishy.

Thoughts?

Cheers,
Would 11. Elizabeth (Cooke) Walton not be a gateway ancestor to Edward III? Here's the line:

1. C is the daughter of John Henry Donaldson (1904-1980) [confident]

2. John is the son of Edith Mae (Kendall) Donaldson (1880-1963) [confident]

3. Edith is the daughter of George Andrew Kendall (1856-1919) [confident]

4. George is the son of John Kendall (abt.1834-1859) [confident]

5. John is the son of Caleb Kendall (abt.1793-1865) [confident]

6. Caleb is the son of William Kendall (1750-1798) [confident]

7. William is the son of Hannah (Hasey) Kendall (1716-1761) [confident]

8. Hannah is the daughter of Mary Walton (bef.1684-) [confident]

9. Mary is the daughter of Samuel Walton (1639-1717) [confident]

10. Samuel is the son of Elizabeth (Cooke) Walton (abt.1602-1682) [confident]

11. Elizabeth is the daughter of Martha (White) Moore (abt.1575-aft.1648) [confident]

12. Martha is the daughter of Isabel (Bawle) White (abt.1552-1601) [unknown confidence]

13. Isabel is the daughter of Alice (Weston) Bawle (abt.1520-aft.1578) [confident]

14. Alice is the daughter of Cecilia (Neville) Weston (abt.1491-1573) [confident]

15. Cecilia is the daughter of Ralph Neville (abt.1475-1497) [confident]

16. Ralph is the son of Ralph Neville KB (abt.1456-1499) [confident]

17. Ralph is the son of Anne (Holland) Douglas (abt.1430-1486) [confident]

18. Anne is the daughter of John (Holland) de Holland (abt.1395-1447) [confident]

19. John is the son of Elizabeth (Lancaster) Holand LG (abt.1362-1425) [confident]

21. John is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England (1312-1377) [confident]

This is my favorite line and has been discussed many times. The problem has been Cecilia Neville has not been accepted as the daughter of Ralph Neville, Lord Neville by Douglas Richardson and other very  knowledgeable people on SGM. I am now past this and think the evidence is overwhelming in favor of supporting the idea that she in fact the daughter of Lord Neville.

You can read my notes on her parentage here: Notes on Cecilia Weston

Shawn Potter recently published a book on just this one question:

  • Potter, Shawn and Lois Potter. Weston Pedigree Reconsidered: A Review of Documentation Provided by the College of Arm. (2022). Available at Amazon.com.
I will be adding Elizabeth Cooke and the several other descendants of Cecilia Neville to the list as confirmed.
Thanks Joe!
My gateway relative is Stewart-9827, Finley Stewart

Phil I converted your comment to an answer with the line. Finley Stewart is not an accepted gateway ancestor though I cannot disprove it easily.  It will take some work and access to sources not easily obtained.

Edward’s grandfather, Henry, is my 25th great-grandfather.

There are a few known French Canadian gateway ancestors with established lines back to royalty. One is Anne Couvent https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Couvent-6  while a second is Catherine de Baillon https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Baillon-1. I descend from Anne Couvent.

You can check this site for others: https://www.francogene.com/gfna/gfna/998/qrd30.htm.

We are looking for direct connections to Edward III. At least right now, neither of these two are directly descended from EIII in WikiTree.

The Dudley line is controversial and not completely accepted. This needs a better write up to explain the problems.

This would be an early 18th century connection, but number 9 here, Robert Weir, was the first on the list to cross the pond.  (He's farther back than I personally track people, so I have no idea of the reliability of his data.)

21. John is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England (1312-1377) [confident]

I have a total of 8 different routes, and several others also don't seem to be on this list, including https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bradstreet-22 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Skepper-51 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Johnson-706 and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bruen-216 who looks to be very complicated.

by Celia Marsh G2G6 Mach 6 (61.0k points)
Mary Bruen-216 was an interesting line that ran through Jane (Parr-850) Fox. However, she was not a daughter of William Parr, Baron Parr of Horton and the line has been broken there.
Mary (Johnson-706) Peasley line was broken at her grandparents. The parentage of her mother Hannah Throckmorten is unknown.
William Skepper-51 is on the original list known descendants of Edward III, so that line is good.
Dorothy (Bradstreet-22) Cotton is the Dudley line. Though possible, the parentage of Henry Dudley-251 is controversial and not accepted as proven.
The parentage of Jane Ferguson is unknown and the line has been broken there.

This line is good, at least from 11 on.  I have not tried to prove the parentage of Rebecca Allen as it is beyond the gateway ancestor. It is a very fun line that goes through James V of Scotland. Congratulations, it is one of the very few lines which will be accepted as proven.
That's wonderful news! I have added sources to Rebecca Allen's profile as well as her daughter Jane Wass. The entire line is now marked confident. Thank you so much, Joe.
When do you think [[Homes-15|Margaret (Homes) Allen (1696-1778)]] will be added to the Gateway Descendants page as a Confirmed Addition?
I have gone ahead and added Thomas Craighead and Katherine Craighead as confirmed additions though some of the profiles could use improvement.

There are a couple of errors in the line as you give it.

Winifred Pole is not a daughter of Margaret Plantagenet, Countess of Salisbury (1473-1541). Winifred does still have descent from Edward III.

John Howland is not a son of Margaret Hastings, so the line breaks here.  I did not look beyond this generation.

I had already removed Margaret Hastings and sent it again. But I appreciate the other correction and will take a close look.

My gateway ancestor is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stuart-1001 I am the 20th GGgranddaughter.

by Briana Nei G2G6 (7.0k points)
Archibald Stuart the immigrant to Virginia is not the son of Andrew Stewart, 7th Baron Castle Stuart. This is going to take a fair amount of work to fix, but the line is not correct.
Archilbald is not my ancestor. It is Andrew’s daughter Rebecca Stuart.

There is some controversy about whether or not Rebecca Stuart was the mother of John McClune's children.

There are good reasons to believe that Colonel Robert Stewart of Irry, Co. Tyrone (1612-1662) was not the son of Andrew Stewart, 3rd Lord Ochiltree.

Both of these issues need to be settled.

1. Elizabeth is the daughter of Dorothy (Forster) Fenwick (abt.1575-)
2. Dorothy is the daughter of Phillis Forster (abt.1550-abt.1606)
3. Phillis is the daughter of Thomas (Forster) of Adderstone (bef.1519-aft.1589)
4. Thomas is the son of Dorothy Ogle (abt.1488-aft.1550)
5. Dorothy is the daughter of Margaret Gascoigne (abt.1473-aft.1515)
6. Margaret is the daughter of Margaret (Percy) Gascoigne (1450-abt.1520)
7. Margaret is the daughter of Henry Percy (1421-1461)
8. Henry is the son of Eleanor (Neville) Percy (abt.1400-bef.1473)
9. Eleanor is the daughter of Joan (Beaufort) de Neville LG (1379-1440)

11. John is the son of Edward (Plantagenet) of England (1312-1377)

The first line is not a direct line because Alice Neville and George Neville were half-siblings having different mothers.
So this line was previously identified as having problems - Phillis Forster could not be the daughter of Thomas Forster (d. 1587) of Adderstone as said in some sources. I have now realized the problems and concluded she is the sister of Thomas Forster (d. 1587)  and an illegitimate daughter of Thomas Forster (d. 1589). This line is looking a lot better...

The immigrant John Jarmyn is not the son of Arthur Jarmyn. I’m out of town on vacation and doing this from my phone. Hopefully I will remember to correct this when home.

This is my favorite line and has come up many times before. It is my favorite because it was subject to intense debate among some of the best in medieval genealogy. The question is, is Cecilia Neville the daughter of Ralph Neville? There was no consensus with the likes of Doug Richardson falling on the side of no she is not.

Within the last two weeks a new book has been published  entirely on this subject.  I am in the process of summarizing the arguments made in the book.

Notes on Cecilia Weston

Certainly in my mind, the arguments are conclusive and I will be accepting this as a proven line.

Nice job on the notes, thanks Joe!

The ancestry of John Guise (1729-1786) is uncertain and probably wrong in WikiTree. In 1749, his reputed father was said to have only one living son - William, age 21. Furthermore, we have sources which give him a different parentage. That said, if the second source is correct it would make him a cousin through Henry Guise and the line would be restored.

More research is needed. Also, the early part of this line needs to be better sourced.

Many thanks for taking a look at this Joe

Andrew, I think it looks pretty good. There were a few key references to your website at http://users.skynet.be/lancaster... which do not work - maybe they could be turned into WikiTree free spaces?

Is it certain that Thomas Barwell (1798-1865) is the same person as Thomas son of William Barwell and Ann Barnes?

Thanks Joe

1. Yes bit by bit I will convert those links. A lot of Belgian genealogists lost their webspace when our biggest telephone company just decided not to be in that business anymore.

2. Thomas is the weakest link. His merchant navy records and London census records all indicate that he was born in Norfolk in about 1797/8, where the name Barwell was not common. Living nearby in the East End were two other Barwells born in Norfolk, Harriot B and Samuel Flack B, who was also in a sailor. Harriot was witness at the weddings of both Thomas and Samuel Flack B in East London. Samuel Flack is a name from the family of Ann Barnes. He was the founder of the family in Norfolk. Thomas the son of Ann Barnes was born 2nd February and baptised March 4th 1798 at Norwich St. George Colegate. The family then moved to Yarmouth. The navy records say Thomas was born  Yarmouth, Norfolk 28 Feb, 1797.

I am interested in the idea on Wikitree of listing Australian gateways. (Louisa is already noted as a Magna Carta gateway by Magna Carta Project.)

Perhaps this example also raises another question. All of Louisa's siblings moved to New Zealand. I wonder if there will be New Zealand gateways eventually.

Hi Kelly, we are looking for direct lines to Edward III (Plantagenet-70). I don't think there is one in what you posted.

Apologies if this is well-trodden ground. Outside of WikiTree, I have in my note Rev. John Wilson as my gateway ancestor to Ed III.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wilson-9783

Is that descent known, and validated?
by Isaac Taylor G2G6 Mach 1 (10.1k points)

Here from my notes outside of WikiTree, is that descent from Ed III via shortest line via Rev. John Wilson (of Boston etc) to well documented (via DAR etc) persons:

1. Edward III PLANTAGENET, King of ENGLAND, France & Ireland 1312-1377 (24th great-grandfather)
2. Lionel PLANTAGENET of Antwerp, Prince of England, 1st Duke of Clarence KG 1338-1368
3. Philippa PLANTAGENET of Clarence, 5th Countess of Ulster 1355-1382
4. Elizabeth MORTIMER, Baroness Camoys 1371-1417
5. Elizabeth PERCY 1395-1436
6. Sir Thomas CLIFFORD of Skipton, 8th Baron Clifford, High Sheriff of Westmorland 1414-1455
7. Sir John ‘the Black-faced’ ‘the Butcher’ CLIFFORD of Skipton, 9th Baron Clifford, High Sheriff of Westmorland 1435-1461
8. Henry ‘the Shepherd Lord’ CLIFFORD of Skipton, 10th Baron Clifford, Honour of Richmond KB 1454-1523
9. Elizabeth CLIFFORD 1490-
10. Margery BOWES of Streatlam 1506-1567
11. Anne EURE (d’Evers) 1533-1566
12. John MANSFIELD, Master of Minories & Surveyors Esq. MP 1551-1601
13. Elizabeth MANSFIELD 1592-1658
14. Rev. John WILSON 1621-1691, the Emigrant
15. Sarah WILSON m. Batt, Torrey 1650-
16. Elizabeth TORREY 1685-1724
17. Elizabeth GREEN (UNCERTAIN) 1705-1781
18. Elizabeth BENNETT 1731-1825
19. Augustine WEBSTER 1768-1850
20. Rev. Ebenezer Tyler WEBSTER 1795-1877
21. Rev. Barton Augustine WEBSTER 1826-1866

If you are aware of an error, please do let me know.

Respectfully, your cousin somehow,

Interestingly, WikiTree calculates some "shorter" relationship rather than direct lineal descent.

We appear to have a break at Greene-2278, who I call "Elizabeth GREEN (UNCERTAIN) 1705-1781"

So, that may be of interest...

We would say Elizabeth Mansfield is your gateway ancestor since she immigrated to New England and died in Boston. She is on the very small list of confirmed additions with a proven path to Edward III. I added the confirmed additions list to the top of this post.

I haven't looked at Elizabeth Green. I generally don't go past the gateway ancestor when researching these lines.

Sheryl,

Your line runs through Jane Deighton, one of the relatively few immigrants with a proven ancestry to Edward III.

The line is good, at least starting from Jane on.  I will leave it to you confirm the rest of the American ancestry.
