Biography

David V. Hughey, B.A., B.S., M.Acc., M.S., Ph.D., was born in Henderson, Nevada in 1944 to Vaughn V. Hughey, a chemist with Basic Incorporated, and Janet R. Tabor, daughter of a Bohemian immigrant. He didn't grow up there as his dad and mom moved first to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and then finally to Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio.

He developed his love of genealogy as a result of an 8th grade Ohio history project on family history. His dad's parents were deceased long before then, but his mom's grandparents helped him with some of the answers. They also kept some "skeletons hidden in the closet." His dad's family, though my dad was born and grew up in northern Michigan, was basically from eastern Kentucky. His maternal grandfather was a Bohemian, who had worked in many ways, ran a beer garden, and ran a grocery store. His maternal grandmother's family was from Bay City, Michigan (They immigrated there from Ontario in the 1880's.)

He earned a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Kent State University. Afterwards, he started a master's in Anthropology at Southern Illinois--Carbondale, but transferred to the University of Pittsburgh to earn his doctorate with a specialty in Human Genetics. His studies there were interrupted by a stint with the US Army Medical Department in Okinawa during the Vietnam War;

He has taught at several colleges and universities in the US and finally finished up being College Dean and Professor at International College of the Cayman Islands on Grand Cayman. He has since earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Accounting, passed the CPA Exam in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2002, and recently became an IRS Enrolled Agent.

He worked as a corporate accountant in Findlay, Ohio, for two years and in Chehalis, Washington, for three more. He is currently a self-employed business owner.

His publications, in addition to his Ph.D. dissertation, include over 115 poems, five books reviews, an chapter in the book Anthropology on the Great Plains, and research notes.

He has been a member of the American Anthropological Association and American Accounting Association, Poets & Writers, and Washington State Tax Consultants. He was an associate member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Life as a Poet

His poem, "The Violet Moth," is part of the October 2015 issue of Art Ascent[1]

Hi David -thank you for being a member of the Jewish Roots Project! I wanted to let you know about some new things we have going on.

- You can see new tabs at the top of our home page, where you can select topics to view or work on. You can also use our new maintenance categories - feel free to add them to your own family, or any other Jewish Roots profile, or work on the maintenance yourself, such as adding new records to profiles with only a couple sources.-I'm sending an invitation to join GoogleGroups, which we are re-starting this week. We'll probably do most group chat there, but the most important things will be posted on G2G, which you will be notified about if you follow the jewish_roots tag. -You can also join Wikitree's discord server, where we have a Jewish Roots chat channel.

-If you have ideas or suggestions for the project, feel free to reply here or send me a message.

Dear David

Elizabeth Charlotte (Alexander) Canning (1805 - 1882) [1]: place of birth query

I am concerned about the birth location given here for the second wife of Stratford Canning 1786-1880. Here's why:

  • My own genealogy database gives her place of birth as "India". Not totally helpful. And nowhere near Kent. I have sourced that in a file note from me to me to "Burke's Landed Gentry 1965 for the loan of which I am indebted to WRA". Unfortunately - on a number of counts - WRA died last October. His widow may know where the book ended up, but William had an awful lot of books.
  • Wikipedia says of Eliza's Dad, James Alexander (1769–1848), that "He returned to the United Kingdom in 1818". Eliza was born in 1805. I don't believe everything I read in Wikipedia (nor indeed in Burke's LG), but this little para is on the face of it plausibly sourced.
  • Wikipedia says that "Somerhill was bought from the descendants of William Woodgate in November 1819 by James Alexander, MP. See my previous comments both about Wikipedia and about the year of Eliza's birth (which her death certificate, of which I currently have a "certified copy" oin the desk in front of me) endorses.
  • James Alexander married Eliza's mother, identified in my own data as Eliza Dundas. on 01 May 1804 in Calcutta (as it was known at that time). A long way from Kent. Again.
  • You have - or someone has - apparently sourced the (?wrong) birth location of Eliza but I am not in a position to evaluate the persuasive power of the source(s) invoked. Maybe ... maybe you are.

I should like to change the birth location to "India". The Genealogical Society in London has (or used to have) endless East India Company directories etc from which I imagine someone with sufficient mobility and enthusiasm could find a more precise birth location for Eliza, but right now that ain't me.

What do you think?

And thank you for any thoughts on this that you may be moved to share.

Though if you are convinced, I shall be more than happy if you make the change without further discussion!

Be aware that I have just posted this same message on the talk page of James Canning who appears to be co-curator (or whatever the wikitree jargon is) responsible for Eliza's page.) There may be a wikitree way to send one message such as this to two people simultaneously, but if there is, I have not yet discovered it.

Be well

Hi David, How are you? Just wanted to let you know that I've removed Snider-173 as the mother of Yennoir-1. She was still married to Willard Hendry in the Census of Canada, 1921, and an article in the Waterloo Chronicle mentions Mrs Willard Hendry vacationing with her sister Emma in 1937. I think FindAGrave has a Canadian Clara Snider mixed up with an American one. See what you think. Thanks, Laurie

It’s Germany Project check-in time again! Please respond within the next 2 weeks and let me know if you’re still interested in participating with the Project. Remember, the only requirements for membership in the Germany Project are (1) that you work on at least one German profile every 6 months and (2) that you respond to this check-in.

Since you’re not working with one of our Sub-projects or Teams yet, please look at our main Project page for a full list and let me know which team you’d like to join.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. In your response, we welcome any feedback you may want to give on the project (what you like about it, what you’d like to see us do, what we could change, etc.)

If you ever have any questions, please ask. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? Hi David! Hope this finds you well and that you're having a good start to the New Year!

It's time for our annual Scotland Project check-in!

This year we are hoping to learn what our membership would like to accomplish over the next 12 months. In case you aren't aware, this year is WikiTree's ""Year of Connections"" and the Project's leadership would like to contribute to this in as many ways as possible.

We would appreciate it if you would share your thoughts and ideas with us on how we can accomplish this goal. We would also appreciate it if you would provide some feedback on our existing goals, including:

  • If you have not yet signed up to help on one of the project's teams, which team(s) would you be interested in joining?
  • How often should we provide a Project Newsletter?
  • Have you participated in the Tartan Trail? If not, is this something you'd be interested in doing?
  • Do you have a question(s) that we could add to a Frequently Asked Questions page?
  • Any suggestions or ideas you have on ways to improve the Scotland Project in general

We continue to communicate with our Project members via Google Group (official) and Discord (unofficial), as well as G2G. You may also reach out to any of the Project leaders via WikiTree's internal messaging system at any time.

Thank you for all you do to help the Scotland Project become a knowledge hub for Scottish genealogical research! We wish you all the best in 2022!

David, just as a point of information, the location "Green, Kentucky" links to the community of Green in Elliott County, Kentucky rather than to Green County, Kentucky as it should. The word "County" must appear in the location for proper linking to Green County. This is also a problem for locations on Ancestry and FamilySearch, creating misleading locations. Standard location suggestions (without the word "County") do not work for many counties in Kentucky. I'm not certain about other states. Thanks for all your help with profiles. - Bill

Hi David,

It's that time of the year again: check-in time! As England Project Leaders, we like to check in with you every six months or so to see how things are progressing. Back in May, we didn't ask for a response due to the rapid emergence of Covid-19 because we understood that people's lives were changing rapidly. While we are still living in a Covid world, we do need to hear back from you this time around.

First of all, how are you doing? What are you currently working on?

Secondly, we're looking for some feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do you use either or both of these? If you don't use either, why not? Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve participation and collaboration, either generally or for you personally?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Hi David

Thank you for adding your DNA Test to your profile on WikiTree. Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. It normally takes 24 hours from adding a test, or adding a new ancestor, or ancestor’s descendant, for WikiTree to display your name and test results on your ancestors and their descendants’ profiles for potential cousins to compare results with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches which relate to the particular branches you are researching.

Have fun!
