Hello everyone, My name is Rob Arzoni, clearly of Dutch origin wink, and I started to map my Italian roots. That led me deep into the Middle Ages and very beautiful stories. In the meantime I have started to map my ancestors on the Dutch side. I hope I can contribute to the family tree that connects us all.

Have fun. Rob

Hi Rob,

Welkom! Leuk dat je er bij bent.

Hi my name is Hans Baijense. I would, like to work on adding my Baijens ancestors and do some additional research. The oldest ancestor we have found so far ia from 1560.

Hi Hans and welcome to the Dutch Roots/Netherlands team, I noticed and welcomed you already, so no problem and just a tip, to make your request to join or answers in G2G's like this more noticed, you can just click answer (instead of comment) and this will make you more visible in the G2G's.

For Dutch (and other) profiles/families at WIkiTree one of the most important things is to check out is our Dutch Naming Convention and how the LNAB (=last name at Birth) is determined

If you have questions feel free to ask, we tried to explain as much as possible and, if you're Dutch, everything is also explained in Dutch. And for everything about Wikitree in Dutch here's our Nederlands Portaal :)

I wish to join the Dutch Roots Project.  I am a descendant of New Netherland Settlers Wijnant Gerritsz and Trijntje Melgers, who came to North America between 1653 and 1654.  I have researched much of my family in North America, and wish to continue following them backwards into the Netherlands.  I have struck a brick wall in the Netherlands, not finding any record of Wijnant Gerritsz or his parents prior to Wijnant's marriage to Trijntje in 1640.  The marriage record states that Wijnant is "from Meppel", but I don't know if he was born there, or if he previously lived there... "Family tradition" says that his father (Gerrit Reijers?) and grandfather (Reijer Gerritsz?) were from Gorinchem in the mid-late 1500's, but I can make no connection to a "Reijer Gerritsz van Asperen" I just discovered, who was banished from Gorinchem by the Blood Council in 1568 for "importing the Reformed religion into Gorinchem"...perhaps Reijer went to Meppel?  It's all about unravelling!
by G2G-8 (8.5k points)

Hi David, nice to see you've joined our Dutch Roots project. I've seen you already 'found' Trijntje Melgers. Bea our project leader will grant you the DR Badge asap

Dank je wel!

Hahaha, I'm pretty sure you ain't Dutch, as I can see that your Last Name is changed to the 'veramerikaanste' spelling.

In the Netherlands your last name would have been written as 'van der Pool'. But I do appreciate your Dank je Wel en like to thank you with Alsjeblieft ;-)

It has been pointed out to me by several persons that it seems very unlikely that a person would migrate themselves and their family from Zuid Holland (Gorinchem) to Drenthe (Meppel) in the time frame I am researching: the latter half of the 16th Century.  It seems more likely that somewhere in the years of transcribing oral stories, or mis-reading written records, that Wijnant Gerritsz's parents came from Groningen, NOT Gorinchem.

I'm not sure I understand your reply.  I, myself, am not Dutch, but I am a direct descendant of several original settlers of Nieuw Nederland, including the de Hooges family, as well as ver Plank and Poest ("Post").  Yes, one of my grandfathers' name was changed in its spelling.  He was christened "Abraham van der Poel" in 1709, but received a land patent from Lord Fairfax in the 1740's as "Abraham Vanderpool", and it has been spelled that way ever since.

David,

My reply was because you were so polite to say Dank je wel in Dutch. And I appreciated that, so I answered with the word 'Alsjeblieft' That would be a normal reply in Dutch. So it was kind of a joke.

And just to inform you. Meppel is in Drenthe, not in Noord-Holland and Meppel is the province beneath Groningen. So it could be right. But I will take a look into the archives if I can help you with your brick wall.

by G2G-1 (1.2k points)

Hi Ted,

Of course I would like to welcome you as well to our Dutch Roots Project. I have search a bit for your Great Great Grandfather and could it be that his name has changed from Salomon in the Netherlands to Soloman in the UK?

Thank you Margreet it is possible  and if that is so does that help me to go further to find out more.

Hi Ted,

Maybe you're looking for the wrong person. I've searched on the Internet and a lot of people where searching for him for quite some years. If you take a look at: Rootschat I think you will find the answer you're searching for.  Start at reply#25 on page 25 (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=679362.msg6624835#msg6624835) and continue until reply#46 on page 6. Only read the replies by "TreeSpirit" and "rutht22000", the others are just white noise.

His name was Salomon Hartog Stuart and he was born on 14 Apr 1817 in Amsterdam.

Great find, Margreet!

Thanks Jan.

Hey all, I am glad to finally find a website with Genealogical data that does value sources and the concept of unique individuals and crowdsourcing (being a WIKI). I am very impressed by all the work already done by others, and would like to contribute my stuff. I only have about 5K people in my Gramps database, mainly because this hobby has been an on/off one for the last 20 years.

So now I have slowly started to import those records into WT, slowly learning (and creating wishes for improvements to the automation of WT here). Having worked in software development for a while now, I think all the copy-paste actions could be highly improved, taking advantage of permalinks/DOI/open data etc. A big example could be the open data wiki on music: Music Brainz and wikidata

My main interest is the source of my last name Vorenhout. It is a rather interesting one, with a lot of spelling variations, so proving who is related, or not, is a rather big undertaking (as I only work with sourced data this does take time). So Voorenhout, Vorenholt, Voordenhout, Voornhout and even Vorenhoud might all be one tree. We will see wink. Besides that I will probably start writing some profiles on the interesting people I have encountered in my (or related) tree. That is what a WIKI is about right?

by Owl (408k points)

Welkom Michel!

My most recent Dutch ancestors come from Friesland and Zeeland in the late 19th Century. I have earlier Dutch ancestors who arrived to the America in the 17th Century.
by G2G-10 (14.7k points)

Hey Colleen,

Welcome! I took the liberty to add some sources/info to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jouwsma-4
Hope that will help in progressing your tree.

Thank you so much!

Hi Colleen,

There is an issue with the birth data recorded in his profile.

Looks like entries in a population register were the source, probably this one and this one, saying he was born November 12, 1813 in Tzum. No parents mentioned. I could not find his birth in Tzum on that date browsing  the Tzum birth register (started here).

On the other hand there is a birth certificate stating his birth was on October 31, 1813 in Tjerkwerd. At his marriage an extract from the birth register was attached, confirming that data. In his death certificate his place of birth is recorded as being Tjerkwerd. In all these documents the same parents are mentioned: Pieter Sjirks Jousma and Wijpkjen Jans Wijnstra (or spelling variation thereof).

Given the consistent data in all these documents I am convinced the entries in the population registers are in error, and October 31, 1813 in Tjerkwerd was his date and place of birth

Thank you. I have been a little confused about which date to put for him. Thank you for clearing that up. I do have the correct parents for him already, just hadn't added that generation yet.

Hi, I'm Lisa and I've recently started researching my ancestry. I'm from Groningen and most of my ancestors are as well, with the exception of a Canadian great-grandfather whose identity is unknown. I joined WikiTree a week ago and I'd like to join the Dutch Roots project.
by G2G-2 (2.2k points)

Welkom Lisa!

I wish to join the Dutch Roots Project to continue the data entry for my family lines with coaching from this Team. Our Dutch lines begin with my US immigrant great grandparents Coleman/Kooiman (b. Gemeente Stavoren) , and De Vries (b. Koudum).  Last month I acquired handwritten tree research completed by genealogist Ype Brouwers in the early 1980s, commissioned by a distant cousin De Vries and given to my father. I had no idea all that I was given even existed. And, today, our last known Kooiman ancestor was officially connected by Bertram Sluys (thank you Bertram) to 6 more well-researched generations, to 1595! What a happy day that was this week.

I am also hoping to discover the origin of a few heirlooms  in particular 1) oil painting on wood by an (unknown) artist Schrotter 2) a Christmas ornament of blue/purple grapes (DEVO)

Thank you for the invitation and guidance so far.

Welcome to WikiTree and the Dutch Roots/Netherlands Project Robert ! And I can imagine it was a really happy day, it probably feels a bit the same as the 'jumping for joy'  feeling we get when our brickwall's finally are solved eeh ? wink

With some luck you will find the deeper ancestors for your 'de Vries' ancestors also are present at WikiTree already !

If you need or would like some help with anything, including the painter(s ?) the easiest and often quickest way is to just start a G2G and add for example the tag Netherlands (or Dutch Roots) to the question if it's for / about Dutch profiles. We have a lot of great members who always are happy to help.

Have fun and happy hunting !

by G2G-9 (9.2k points)

Hoi Jan Cees,

Hi, my name is Michael Bakkes and I am curious in finding out more about my family tree. I would like to continue my fathers research that got back to 1345 for one branch of the family and would like to connect it all here on wiki tree.
by Newt (530 points)

Hi Michael,

Welcome at our Dutch Roots Project. I'm very curious which family name your looking for, because there are not so many families who could go back (with resources) to 1345. Than it must be a very special family.

Bea will reward you with the Project Member Badge as soon as she sees this post. But in the meanwhile maybe I could help you if you have a question?

It's about the name 'Van Grevenbroek'

My grandfather was Amos von Kirk Kuykendall.  I have traced the Kuykendall line back to Jacob Leurszen van Kuykendall, who came to New Amsterdam in 1646.  I would like to find his ancestors in the Netherlands and continue my family research.
by

Hi Terrell,

Welcome to the Dutch Roots Project. It seems that you've already done a lot of investigation and managed to get way back to 1596. I'm not sure if it would be very easy to trace more ancestors information.

Hallo!  Mijn naam is Heather (Shear) Ford.  And that's about the extent of my Dutch, for now. My maternal grandfather's parents (Bakker, Van Zuiden) both arrived in America from Groningen sometime between 1885 and 1909 and settled in Fulton, Whiteside County, Illinois, although some eventually resettled nearer Chicago.  I really don't have anything in the way of documents for any of them, other than a photocopy of an obituary for one of my 2x great grandmothers.  Everything else I have is from family trees of others that are DNA matches, via MyHeritage.

I am hoping someone can point me to the correct resources for Warffum and the surrounding communities. My family surnames include Bakker, Blokzijl, Van Zuiden, van der Hoek, Vos, Doorbos, and several others.

Thanks!
by G2G-4 (4.5k points)

Hi Heather, welcome to WikiTree and the Dutch Roots project!

Dutch genealogy is relatively easy to do because almost all official birth, marriage, death records are searchable online in multiple archive websites, like OpenArchives, WieWasWie (WhoWasWho), and most detailed for the province of Groningen (Warffum!) AlleGroningers. Looking into the name "van Zuiden" in Groningen a bit I find eight emigrants.

And then searching FamilySearch for "van Zuiden" immigrants (Ellis Island) I find five records.

No doubt more of your Dutch ancestors and immigrants can be found with more detailed research.

Feel free to post any research questions here, tagging them dutch_roots!

Jan, thank you for the info.  I found WieWasWie on my own, years ago, but wasn't sure if it was an official source or not.  Glad to hear that it is - it will receive another visit soon. I will also be sure to check out the other two sites, especially AlleGroningers.

by Newt (710 points)

Hallo Erwin,

Welkom!

Hello,

My name is Daniel Schloss. Although I do not have Dutch roots my mother-in-law, Anna Lou Roering does, and I am doing her research for her tree.  Her father was Kai Johannes Josua Pedersen Gabriel from Copenhagen.  She has researched names back to 1710 and has stopped.  I am hoping this project can continue the search.
by Newt (770 points)

Hi Daniel,

Looking at the names and the place Copenhagen there is no direct Dutch (Netherlands) connection, but more likely a Danish one. I think you should contact the Denmark project.

Thank you for the reply.  I have started the process at the Danish Project.

Hi, I lived in Dutchess county, NY for over 40 years and as this area was first settled by quite a few Dutchmen. I'd became quite interested in the land settlement and the families that were doing that so perhaps I can help.
by G2G-2 (2.9k points)

Hi Fred,

I'm a bit puzzled by your answer. But that is maybe because I don't really understand what you mean by land settlement. Do you want to help people with Dutch Roots in the USA to find out if an ancester was settled in Dutchess Country?

I am interested in joining the Dutch Roots Project. Family names that I have discovered so far are:

Hi Carol,

Welcome to our Dutch Roots Project. If there's anything we can help you with, just ask one of our coördinators. Bea, our Project Lead, will grand you the DR badge (or is it the Netherlands badge ;-))

Hi Carol, it looks like you were not logged in to WikiTree so I'm having a bot of trouble finding your profile, if you have a WikiTree ID for me or if you can log in and answer here that would do the trick ;) (there are quite a few members (profiles) named Carol Fleming wink)

And looking at the names and how you added them here, I think it's handy to know that the Dutch Naming convention is quite different from what most WikiTreers are used to, so we have explained all about it here: Dutch Naming Convention.

My name is Klaas Wierenga, originally from the Netherlands, now in the United States. My ancestors are mostly from the province of Groningen. by Newt (980 points)

Hallo Klaas,

by G2G-5 (6.0k points)

Welcome at our Netherlands, former Dutch Roots Project. If there's anything we can help you with just ask. The sources in the Netherlands are very good to access online and a lot of the offers also the information in English. Bea, our Project leader will add the Netherlands badge to your profile.

Succes in the search for your ancestors.

Hi, I would like to join the project! I'm working on sourcing out my Voorhies/Van Voorhees family line on my mother's side. I'm looking for experts in this family if any exist (see my previous stand alone post I made today regarding this family.)

I'm especially interested because I have a friend who immigrated to the Netherlands recently as a refugee and lives in the same area where my ancestors are from. Small world!

Hi Jessika,

Welcome. I have seen your post and I also noted that one of our coordinators (Joop van Belzen) directed you to a good source for this family. And if you want to see more approved and online accessible sources you can look at our DR/Netherlands Project Page.
