Hi and welcome,

Whatever the reason you ended up on our page to become a member of the Netherlands project: Welcome!

To become a member of the Netherlands Project  just place your answer beneath this post. It would be great if you tell something about genealogiscal interests in your answer. Someone will give you an answer and show you the way on wikitree if you want it. If you are not well acquinted with the way Wikitree works, or with  the way Dutch profiles need to be created, you can read more about it on the following pages:

How to proceed after you have placed your aswer:

  • Copy and paste this category:  [[Category:Netherlands_Project]] at the top left of your own biography as soon as you have received your badge. It is your link to the Dutch roots pages
  • Do the pre-1700 Self Certificate Quiz (in case you haven’t done it yet)
  • Add Netherlands to the tags you ar following on G2G (see Communication)
  • Send a request to join the Dutch Roots Project's Google Group
  • And in case you have some spare time you’d like to spend on the project, have a look at the Netherlands-page to see where helping hands are welcome. The regional teams can always use more members.

And of course on behalf of all of us, many thanks for joining in advance and have fun on Wikitree!

@Gerry Moss and Fank Brash:

Welcome to the Netherlands project!! I will give you the badge. You both answered the old join post. You can find the new post here  with all the up to date links to the project pages.

@Frank: I noticed quite a lot of your profiles have just a family tree on Familysearch as a source but I trust you will be adding primary sources to those in the future.

Have fun on WikiTree and join in, in the activities on our shared tree!!

We are all family.

Coen maakte me eerst member of the trusted list.

Succes, Minke.

Hello! I'd like to join the DRP/Netherlands project to continue with my family tree.  I have traced all great great grandparents to the Netherlands and hope to find living distant relatives.
by Newt (650 points)

Hi Carla,

I would like to wish you a warm Welcome to our Dutch Roots Group. Sometimes also called the Netherlands project. I'm happy to welcome you as the first member in our new Join the Dutch Roots Project thread.

I already have granted you the access to the Google Group and if I'm well informed your badge will be arranged tonight.

Feel free to ask all the questions you have.

Thank you!

I awarded you the badge.

Keep in mind that living relatives are hard to find due to the privacy laws in Europe en the privacy settings in Wikitree. I hope you still find a way to get in contact with distant relatives.

Noted.  Thank you!

My ancestors emigrated from Amersfoort to New Netherland in the early 1600s. I have close Y-DNA matches in the Netherlands. We have trying to trace our common ancestry before 1600, but have been unsuccessful so far.
by G2G-2 (2.8k points)

Hi Bob,

I also would like to give you a warm Welcome (it's hot in the Netherlands today ).

Searching for ancestors around 1600 is always very challenging. I hope we are able to find the sources that your looking for.

Hi Bob,

When I tried to give you  the member badge I discovered you already have one: awarded to you on 11 jan 2020. But glad to hear from you. Hope you can find some information about your ancestors in Amesfoort. More and More sources in the Netherlands are coming on line.... so who knows. maybe you will be lucky.

Hi Eef,

Thank you for all that you do for the Netherlands project!

(I was not sure whether DRP and Netherlands were the same project.

Hello, I would like to be part of this project. My father immigrated from the Netherlands here to the US with his parents and brothers just after WWII. I was very close with my grandmother who passed away in 2000. She had fantastic and heartbreaking stories about the war and when she lost her sight, I attempted to write down as many of her stories for her as I could. We are starting to lose touch with those family members still in the Netherlands as generations get older. A couple of years ago with the help of Ancestry I found a relative and my son spent some time with him on his trip abroad. Turns out their great grandparents were siblings (my grandmother's brother was only one of her family who stayed). My husband is also Dutch on both sides and I've begun tracing his family tree as well.

Thank you!

Paula (DeBoer) Prince (most likely Prins before it was Americanized)
by Newt (660 points)

Hi Paula,

I gave you th Dutch Roots badge so you are now officially a member of the Netherlands project. We use both those names for the project so don't get confused.

I had a look around and saw the profile of your Ggrandmother is up for adoption. so if you want to be the manager of it. Just adopt it.

Have a look around on the DRP pages and if you have questions left. Just ask them in the G2G forum.

Lots of fun and discoveries to you!!

Hi Paula,

Welcome and what a splendid idea that you have written down all those stories from your grandmother. I'm a bit jealous I didn't do that in time. And because your husband is also Dutch your name probably would be Paula de Boer - Prins ;-)

I'm not sure whether I should join this project or not.  My father was always talking about a Great Grandfather Schoonover that came over on the "boat" when I was growing up.  For some reason, I always thought Schoonover sounded German.  However, after joining Geni I discovered Schoonover is Dutch.  My Grandmother Morgan was always referring to herself as being "Black Dutch", whatever that means.

My question is, are their any Schoonovers in this project?  I would like to know who he was talking bout.  In my Ancestry DNA test, it says I'm about 37% England & Northwestern Europe, 36% Scotland, 13% Irland, about 10% Gremanic Europe and 4% Sweden, but no mention of Dutch.  I would be interested in any of this project's members to fill me in on the Schoonover name if possible.

Thank you very much.

Joe Morgan - Piedmont, OK
by G2G-7 (8.0k points)

Joe,

I've seen that you've asked the question about the Schoonovers before on the G2G. There are Schoonovers in the Netherlands, but if there's no lead to go on it would be very difficult. What is the first Schoonover that you know off?

The name Schoonover stems from Schoonhoven (and yes, from the Netherlands) and you can see  a lot of Schoonovers on wikitree. You can look for yourself if you want to. On any profile at the very top ther's a space next to a looking glass. Put the name Schoonover in it,  press the looking glass and you will get a list of Schover profiles with at least 3 active members . They trace the name way back.

About black dutch: I found a wikipedia page about them. Don't know if your dad used the term with the same meaning.

so you probably have dutch ancestors. Just have to tract them back in time and see where they connect with the other Schoonovers.

So let me know if you still want to become a member of our project. You don't have to.

whenever you have questions about wikitree and you can't find it in the help pages (those can be frustrating) just ask a question in G2G and ther will always be people to answer them.

Hello, I do not speak Dutch, but I have several lines on my maternal side, including, Van Valkenburg, Vrooman.
by Newt (650 points)

Hi Denise,

It's not a problem at all if you don't speak Dutch (as long as you accept that we're not native speakers in English, so sometimes this can lead to confusion ;-) ).

But you're welcome within the project if you want to explore your Dutch Ancestry.

Hi Denise,

Your Dutch lines go way back in time and belong to the New Netherlands settlers The van Valkenburgs came to the States about 1642. I have just been helping on those lines to add some dutch sources. Have a look around in those lines on wikitree and see where your branch fits in. I would advise you not to use a GED-com because making the profiles by hand is as much work as  trying to get a ged-com on wikitree. And with a GED-com I foresee a lot of doubles.....

To get to the profiles with Valkenburg and Vroom:. At the top of your own profile (not here in G2G) is a space with a looking glass next to it. Put the name you are looking for in the space and push the looking glass. It will get you a list of all the profiles with that name on wikitree. And use different spelling varieties to find them all. As a rule we use the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) and if we don't have a birth or baptism, we use the oldest document with the name to decide what we use on wikitree. Because we have just the one tree with everyone just one time on it, we need some criteria everyone adhers to.

I would love to join, thank you. If you can accept my entire lack of Dutch, I can certainly accept English as a second language. Perhaps I will learn some Dutch along the way.

Google translate is doing fine.

Thank you once again.

byt the way: you've got the badge now.

I am a former South African now living in the USA. I have traced my Heymans male ancestor line back to one Hendrick Bernadus Heymans, or Heijmans who migrated to the Cape and was employed by the VOC, sometime just prior to 1788. He was born in Doesburg, a small town in Gelderland near Arnhem either in 1755 or 1763... need that verified. There are 6 generations between this person and myself and I have details of all those generations. I am interested in this person and his ancestors, I have been a very frequent visitor to NL for work reasons and know the Gelderland region very well. HB Heymans appears to be the son of Hendrick Heymans, who was born in 1752 in Doornick Nijmegen, married on Nov 12 1762 to one Megteld Beukers and died in Nijmegen on Dec 5 1809.  I would like to research that family line going back as far as I can.

Thank you

Brian Heymans

by Newt (680 points)

Hi Brian,

Welcome to this Dutch Roots group. I see that you are still a guest member. I'm not sure if you're planning to stay on Wikitree and participate in our mutual goal. Therefore I'm not sure if and in which way you want to join our project.

What I  do want  to to show to you is that Hendrik Heymans and his spouse are already on Wikitree. His birthdate however is different then your date. And I don't think that 1752 could be correct if he married (sourced) on Nov 1762. You could look at his profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Heijmans-25

Thanks for the correction, it was my mistake, I transposed the numbers in the date. I have built a family tree in MyHeritage.com, and my research suggests he was born in 1725 (not 1752, my mistake), however the link you sent me shows 1733 but that was shown as uncertain. I'll dig through my Heritage web site resources again to see why there is that discrepancy..

I do need advice on the membership of the Dutch group.... am still trying to navigate the website. I am not going to get into doing deep research as I live in the USA so I wonder what joining the Dutch Group will mean, can you explain? I am using the  MyHeritage system to build my family tree starting with my 4 grandparents named Heymans, Kuter, Sinclair and Orsmond and just following the male ancestral names. I will probably use Wikitree more on Kuter (German) and Orsmond (English) and if there are records for Hendrick Heymans in either Nijmegen or Doesburg worth digging up. Thanks again for responding and I would welcome further advice.

Brian Heymans

oh, forgot to say I can add more information about my father and immediate family but don't know how to do that... need advice.

Thanks

Brian Heymans

Hi Brian,

Maybe it is wise to start with this page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:New_Member_How-To

This will tell you a lot on how to find your way in Wikitree. I'm still not convinced that at this moment the Dutch Roots project is the right project for you.

Thanks again for your prompt response. I will look through the "how to" link. I am not sure what the Dutch Roots project is all about, but as I said my searches have been on the surface, and rather broad, so i probably don't need to join a more aggressive project at this time. I'll decide once I have dug around the web site more. I also have a great interest in UK history and archaeology... and this takes up a lot of my time.

Thanks again,

Brian Heymans

The goal of the Dutch Roots Project is: The Dutch Roots Project is a project for WikiTreers interested in improving the profiles of early (Pre-1811) Dutch people and their descendants (so Pre-1811 till now). This project serves as a forum for researchers and descendants of all people born in the Netherlands so for everyone with Dutch Roots. Mission is to improve and add sources to all profiles belonging to the Dutch Roots Project.

Wow, you are on the ball. Are you based in NL?

The family information in the Wikitree profiles ends with my father and I am happy to add more information to his profile and create one of me and my children if that possible for others to see.

Yes, based in the Netherlands as all of our Project Coördinators are based in the Netherlands. And you can add your parents to Wikitree, however keep in mind that according to Legal Restrictions (AVG/GDPR), living people are not visible for the community, only for yourself (or members that you add to this familyprofile).

OK, I'll just add my mother to this.

I gave you the Dutch Roots/Netherlands badge.

My Grandfather was from Brabant, (Belgium). My husband's paternal Grandmother's roots are also in Brabant. I'm currently working on both family trees.
by Newt (930 points)

Hi Ani,

From the profiles you created it looks, like you say, your European ancestors were Belgian. There is a Belgium project too, so it seems more fitting to join that project instead of the Dutch Roots one. Please see Would you like to join the Belgium Project?

Hi Ani,

Let me know which badge you want, the Dutch or the Belgian one. At the moment the belgian project is part of the Netherlands one, due to not having enough active members. If you choose to become a part of the Belgian part it would be wise to put also a message on the belgian join thread in G2G like Jan mentioned. This for future references. We hope in the near future  active WikiTreers will start the seperate belgian project again. Their help pages you can find here

I would like to join this project.  My Dutch ancestors settled in Albany New York (Beverwyck, New Netherland ) around 1623 and other ancestor lines in New York and Bergen, New Jersey around the same time.
by Newt (900 points)

Hi Robert,

Glad you joined wikitree. I saw you already found a connection between your branch and the big (wiki)tree. We would be glad if you joined the Netherlands project but realise that doing dutch research that far back in time is very difficult. Not a lot of records are preserved anymore. Mainly in the big cities. so it is important to know where in the Netherlands your ancestors came from.

Do you know we have another project on WikiTree that covers the New Netherlands Settlers? I would advice you to join that project to begin with. Lots of those settlers are on WikiTree already and they can tell you the ins and outs of how to add ancestors that are not on wikitree yet.

Have fun on Wikitree and let me know if you want our badge or prefer to start with the New Netherlands Settlers.

Hallo,

by Newt (560 points)

Hoi Frank,

by G2G-1 (1.3k points)

Hoi Bert,

Welkom bij onze groep. I will continue in English because I guess this is much easier for you. You will receive your badge soon. I would advice you to take it slow. Dive into the archives and source all the information you have. If you need any help just ask.

Dear Margreet, I guess my Dutch is atrocious, seeing how rapidly you retreated to English. Honest, I can read Dutch fairly well so feel free to respond in the language you are comfortable with. Thank you for your response and I look forward to receiving my badge. Greetings, Bert

Hi Bert,

I've got you the project badge. Welocme!! You do a good job at sourcing already. My compliments!! It took me more time to figure that out.

Happy WikiTreeing.

Thank you Eef. I'm still learning the WikiTree source protocol but looking at how an experienced WikiTreer does it helped a lot as well as reading some of the help topics. I have many cousins living in and around Eindhoven and most of my Dutch ancestors come from Noord Brabant, specifically Boekel, Veghel, Uden and Zeeland N.B. I'll continue to add more of my relatives until I connect to the main Tree. Regards, Bert

I'd love to join the Dutch Roots Project.

I'm currently working on putting my own ancestors on WikiTree, which means I am mostly working in Zuid-Holland, Utrecht and Zeeland. I'm also very interested in the stories behind the people, so therefore I am involved with the Profile Improvement Project, and I always try to put more details in the profiles I create than just vital statistics.

I am also very seriously considering embarking on a one place study... So I'm keeping busy with Dutch genealogy and family history, that's for sure!
by Owl (30.1k points)

Welcome J.!!

We'd love to have you on the project. We met  already on discord  during the Source-a-Thon.  Good sourcing and well written biographies are the best we could wish for. Let us know if you need any help or  about which place you want to do a one place study.

And I added the profile badge just now.

Thank you!

Hoi Rudy,

I am very interested in joining this project. I have been fixing profiles around the Rapalje family and have noticed that Rapalje-20 has many items on there that refer to the fraudulent Coligny-Rapalje line that need to be eliminated, including the fictitious existence of Breckje Janssen, and the "Jean Jan Rapalje" name used instead of Jean Rapareillet, the father of George Rapareillet, later Joris Rapalje.
by G2G-10 (12.1k points)

Hi Concetta,

I'll give you the badge and wish you lots of fun and succes in unmasking these fraudulent profiles. You know it is not possible to remove profiles from Wikitree? They have to go to a special project where volunteers are looking after them as soon as you have untangled them.

My mother traveled to Canada from Bussum in 1939 to start a music and gymnastics school with a friend. When WWII started, she was stuck in Canada. She ended up in Chicago where she met my father. He was from a small town in Iowa. They were married shortly after Pearl Harbor. He spent the war in Algiers and Italy while my mother remained in Chicago and gave birth to my older brother. Both had 8 siblings, and all survived. I have visited my Dutch family several times. I am still researching my Dutch ancestors.
by Newt (860 points)

Hi Mike,

I gave you the project badge. Be welcome in the The Netherlands/Dutch Roots Project. I see you are already following the tag Netherlands. If you would add Dutch Roots also, you won't miss any dutch subjects in G2G.

I wish you lots of fun on wikitree and if you have any questions at all: just ask them.

Hallo,

Ruud Schmidt

by Newt (530 points)

Hoi Ruud,

in the papers I found from my father Hendrik, a large parts of the Rozeboom family was already searched for.
As a memory for his I chose to look for more and put it here on Wikitree.
Also the family from my mothers side (Koekkoek) was interesting and can be found here also.

Hoi Rense,

And if your english is better than your dutch: welcome to the Netherlands Project!! I already gave you the project badge.

Welcome Annet,

I write this in english because you did too but I presume you understand - at least a bit -  dutch? Not that it is needed to join but we  have some members around who don't speak English. Most of us do. I had a look at the profiles you already created and they look really good. Proper sources, correct way to  - not - use the middle name etc. You are finding your way real quick here on WikiTree. If you like to join one of our provincial teams, just let us know. No hurry though. Just have a look around before you decide things like that. I would advice you to add the tags Netherlands and Dutch Roots so you will receive all the messages we use to communicate with the project members

I'll give you the badge. So you will officially be a member of the Netherlands project.
