Hi and welcome,

Whatever the reason you ended up on our page to become a member of the Netherlands project: Welcome!

To become a member of the Netherlands Project  just place your answer beneath this post. It would be great if you tell something about genealogiscal interests in your answer. Someone will give you an answer and show you the way on wikitree if you want it. If you are not well acquinted with the way Wikitree works, or with  the way Dutch profiles need to be created, you can read more about it on the following pages:

How to proceed after you have placed your aswer:

  • Copy and paste this category:  [[Category:Netherlands_Project]] at the top left of your own biography as soon as you have received your badge. It is your link to the Dutch roots pages
  • Do the pre-1700 Self Certificate Quiz (in case you haven’t done it yet)
  • Add Netherlands to the tags you ar following on G2G (see Communication)
  • Send a request to join the Dutch Roots Project's Google Group
  • And in case you have some spare time you’d like to spend on the project, have a look at the Netherlands-page to see where helping hands are welcome. The regional teams can always use more members.

And of course on behalf of all of us, many thanks for joining in advance and have fun on Wikitree!

@Gerry Moss and Fank Brash:

Welcome to the Netherlands project!! I will give you the badge. You both answered the old join post. You can find the new post here  with all the up to date links to the project pages.

@Frank: I noticed quite a lot of your profiles have just a family tree on Familysearch as a source but I trust you will be adding primary sources to those in the future.

Have fun on WikiTree and join in, in the activities on our shared tree!!

We are all family.

Coen maakte me eerst member of the trusted list.

Dank Coen!

Hi David,

I'm glad to hear you want to honor your Dutch connection. But since that connection is that far back in time and very well researched by the Netherlands project together with the New Netherlands Settlers project (nothing new to add) I would advice you to go for a membership of the NNS. They concentrate their activities more in the area your a bit more recent ancestors were living . You can find their WikiTree page here and their join post here.

by Newt (950 points)

Hoi Robert-Jan,

Groet Robert Jan Hogen Esch

Hello, I would like to join the Dutch roots group. I have many Dutch ancestors and I'm very interested in the culture of their names. Not the American first middle last that I'm used to. I have quite a bit to learn and I will try. Please understand I am not internet savvy. Very excited.
by G2G-4 (4.5k points)

Hi Shawn, welcome!

I am sure you will be amazed at the quality and quantity of available and easily accessible
Dutch records. As to Dutch naming, there are some important differences with American naming:

  • No middle names, all given names go in the Proper First Name item
  • No upper casing of prepositions, so "de Boer", not "De Boer"
  • No concatenation of prepositions (and surname), so "van de Koppel", not "Vandekoppel"
  • Married Dutch women keep their maiden name in all official documents, so you won't find records for Hendrikus van de Koppel's spouse Neeske searching "Neeske van de Koppel", but only when searching for "Neeske Verhoeven"

All of the above of course only applies as long as persons are resident in the Netherlands. Once emigrated local customs apply.

Did a bit of researching, to get some (I think) nice details on the emigrated van de Koppel family:

Hi Shawn,

I will give you the badge for the project. Welcome!!

Your Dutch ancestors are from the Provinces of Noord-Brabant, Groningen en Friesland. Maybe it is a bit early because you just joined WikiTree and have to learn how everything works But think about joining one of our provincial teams.

Thank You. Provincial teams? That sounds very interesting. Can you please give me information on how to join them. That would be very appreciated.

Hello, I would like to join the Dutch roots group. I have many Dutch ancestors and I'm very interested in learning more. Since my tree also includes Irish ancestry, I really appreciate the record keeping on my Dutch side.  I will do my best to follow the style guide and the Dutch_Roots_Project rules.
by Newt (530 points)

Hi Tim,

Welcome to our WikiTree and to the Netherlands Project (former Dutch Roots, as we are in a transition phase ;-) )

I hope we're able to help you in this new year finding your ancesters. I've looked a bit at your profiles, but I would like to tell you that a reference to Ancestry.com is not a valid source in the world of WikiTree. And for all Dutch profiles I'm sure you will find the original records for either or all Birth, Marriage and Death records free online. (Ancestry is not free accessible and so other people could not see the original source). If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact one of our coördinators or members.

Kind Regards,

Margreet

(p.s. your badge will be granted soon by our Project Leader Eef)

Yes, I will add the project badge to your profile. I see that all your Dutch ancestors come from the province of Zeeland. Maybe something to think about: joining the Zeeland team as soon as you are a bit mor comfortable in working on wikitree. No obligations though. Just think about it.

I would like to join the Dutch Roots Project/Netherlands Project. I have a lot of ancestors who came from the Netherland on both sides. Started with Holtrop-Huizenga, Rogers-Garner and would love to continue and polish up profiles. I have linked into the world tree (very exciting) and have picked up some orphans (hoping one of them belongs to someone).  I don't speak the language yet, but use google translate quite frequently lol.

Hi Shawn,

you accidentally registered twice, but if you look at your original posting, Jan already found some nice information for you and some guidelines.

Regards and Welcome

I am trying to find predecessors, specifically parents of Derck de Vos, commisioner in Groenlo in ±1650 to 1700. Also more information on his family (as far as I know two wives - Maria van Ravenstein and Johanna Odilia Stürtz - and three sons - Jacob, Jan Willem and Wouter).
by Newt (870 points)

Are you just looking for information or do you want to join the project? If you are just looking for information you could ask the question in the G2G-forum and add the tags Netherlands and Dutch Roots .

If you want to join a project, the south african project seems to be the one most approriate in your case. You can join more than one project if you want to but the geographical projects are more about working together on the profiles from a certain countryl.

Let me know if you still want to become a member. You are always welcome to join.

I'm very much interested in continuing my research on all of my various Dutch ancestral lines. These surnames include Oosterhoudt/Oosterhout, Roosa, Rosekrans, Vroom, Schoonmaker, Wynkoop, Staats, Pels, Hendricks, Vredenburgh, Kool, Dircks, Langendyck, de Jongh, Symons, Leenderts, plus some Huguenot surnames in New Netherland, such as de Rapalje, de Puy, Cuvellier, and Vigne. In the past year I have tried to get a yDNA surname study off the ground at FTDNA, with little success. There are only three of us in my group thus far, but there are plenty on this website with surnames Oosterhout, Oosterhoudt, Osterhoudt, Osterhout, van Oosterhout, and van Oosterhoudt. Thanks!
by Owl (36.6k points)

Hi Geoff,

Welcome to the Netherlands project and I hope you can find more relatives on this site. If there's anything where we can help you with, just ask.

Hi Geoff,

I will give you the badge but keep in mind that your dutch ancestors are all quite far back in time and it will probably be very difficult to impossible to find more information about them.

The one name study sounds very promising. The surname is derived from the town   nowadays called Oosterhout. Do you know we have more than one Oosterhout in the Netherlands? One in the province of Noord-Brabant and one - smaller town - in the province of Gelderland.

Hi, I would like to join your Group so that I can learn about my family that came from the Netherlands also I'm somewhat new to Genealogy, what got started my friend gave me a DNA test from Ancestry back in May 2021 so the I joined Ancestry.com made a family tree, Thats when I found out that I had family from the Netherlands, that is a little bit about me and I hope I can be of help to the Group.
by G2G-3 (3.6k points)

Hi David,

Welcome to our Project. I hope we are able to help you. There's a lot of information on Wikitree about our project and about how you can find your way around our Dutch Archives. At this moment we are in the middle of our project change so I'm not sure if it's easy to find your way around. But maybe this is a small help: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Netherlands

Thanks, I look forward to working with you guys.

Hi David,

I had a look at your family tree here on wikitree and noticed your dutch connection is quite far back in time via the New Netherlands Settlers. I don't want to discourage your enthousiasm because we love new enthousiastic volunteers but you admitted yourself you are quite new to genealogy. I will give you the badge  but I would also advice to start your genealogical research a bit nearer to home. It will be easier to find sources. You can join more than one project so joining another project, one that covers the area where those nearer ancestors lived would be a good option also.

Answering the new post to officially join!

Already longer on here and had the Dutch_Roots tag before, working on my own family and atm struggling with patronym issues and underdocumented handed down trees...
by G2G-3 (3.3k points)

Hoi Joop,

We kunnne altijd extra mensen gebruiken.

My name is Paige Ardell Bleeker/Blihar/Blichar/Bleecker/Blecker.

I'm looking for the truth about who I am and where I came from.
by Newt (740 points)

Hi Paige,

Welcome to WikiTree!!

Bleeker sounds as a Dutch name. Do you know how far back in time your Bleeker ancestor went from the Netherlands to the USA? Or is it still something you have to find out for yourself?  I will gladly welcome you in our project but I think it would help you even more to look also for a second project to become a member of. A project that covers the area your more recent ancestors came from. The Netherlands project knows a lot about the best Dutch sources, but you have first to find your way through your american ancestors to arrive in the Netherlands.

Oh, and maybe good to know: if you want to add more ancestors to wikitree you probably have to upgrade to Volunteer. No costs involved,  only time and your efforts to try to source the profiles you create the best you can.

Lots of succes on your genealogical voyage!!!!!

I've traced the roots on my maternal great grandmother's side to the VanWinkle family.  I've gotten to my 13th Great Grandfather, Pieter Jan Walichs and I'd like to continue working on the tree.
by Newt (500 points)

Hi Lisa,

I awarded you the Netherlands Project badge but I would strongly advice you to also join a project a bit nearer to home. Your Dutch ancestry is researched by the New Netherlands Settlers project and is that far back in time  that it is very difficult to find anymore sources for them. The Netherlands Project  handles the Dutch part of Wikitree and members take part in the challenges and try to improve Dutch profiles. You're still welcome in the project but I don't know if there will be anything we can mean for eachother.

It is the community that makes WikiTree and to find your part of that community where you can participate can be quite important.

Hello! I would like to join this project! I signed up in 2019 and since then I have worked on my own family tree here.
by Newt (500 points)

Hoi Robin,

Hi,.

I am always searching for my Dutch ancestors, surname BLUM.

My Great x 2 Grandfather Peter Blum migrated from Rotterdam, Netherlands to Melbourne, Australia (where I live) in 1857.

No-one has ever been able to find details of his European family. All we have are the names of his parents Peter lists on his Marriage Cert.; Hugh Blum and Dortje Van Wingarten (spelling?).

Blum seems to be an uncommon name in Netherlands.

Thanks for this project, I'm always trying to discover my Dutch ancestors.

Colin
by G2G-1 (1.5k points)

Hi Colin,

Welcome in the Netherlands project. Blum could be Dutch but also German. Dutch Spelling could be Bloem and Hugh is not a dutch name (Hugo maybe?) I hope you will find some kind of source. Did your ancestor only depart from Rotterdam or did he live there? Sources from 1811 on are quite good and free in the Netherlands so it must be possible to find something though not everything is already digitized . I wish you loads of succes in finding more about your Dutch ancestors. If you want any help, just ask the question here in G2G - don't forget to tag it with "Netherlands" - or on discord on the Netherlands channel.

You have the badge now. See you on WikiTree!!

Hi Colin, also welcome to the Netherlands project.

If the names are Dutch then

The Van Wingarten name is most likely to be van Wijngaarden

Dortje -> Dorothea or Theodora

e.g. Dorothea van Wijngaarden https://www.wiewaswie.nl/en/detail/64058470

Peter would most likely be Pieter.

Blum could have been Blom, Bloem or Bloeme originally, although there are a few Blüm / Blum records in WieWasWie but none that are a H Blum.

Can you give more details about the marriage?  e.g. date and place?

P.S.  When creating profiles, make sure not to use all CAPS, e.g. BLUM should be Blum or possibly Blüm.  You can edit that afterwards, but then it creates a new profile and redirects to old one to it, so it is best to get it correct when creating it.

Hoi!

I'd love to join the Netherlands project, as most of the profiles I work on tend to be Dutch. Within the Netherlands my ancestors are mostly from Noord-Brabant, Overijssel, Gelderland, Zuid-Holland, Utrecht and Limburg. Although I tend to get distracted on work on plenty of other profiles.
by Owl (28.5k points)

Hoi Monique!!

I have been working on my (mainly Frisian) family tree off and on for over ten years, and have posted my direct lines on wiki-tree.  I am very interested in finding out when/how/why extended family members migrated to other countries.  I did 23 & me and also need some guidance how the results can be used in wiki-tree.
by G2G-1 (1.6k points)

Hi Betty!

I just gave you the badge. In noticed you had a look on wikiTree in 2014 but just recently became more active here. Doesn't really matter. You're always welcome! I can't help you with your DNA-questions but you could ask about it on G2G. Don't forget to add the right tags.

Maybe it is an idea to have a look on other profiles in edit mode to see how they  the sourcing is done. You are on the right track but it needs just some sprucing up.

Happy WikiTreeing!!!

Hello-I'd like to join to find answers to Dutch heritage on my maternal side.
by G2G-3 (3.7k points)

Hi Carrie

I'm sure you will be added to the Netherlands Project soon.

Can you please add Netherlands as one of the tags you follow, as then you are more likely to see project posts and updates if you want to participate in Netherlands Project challenges questions about Dutch ancestors.

What information do you have about your Dutch ancestors, and have you created a profile on WikiTree yet?  Then we can help you start the ball rolling on researching your Dutch ancestors if you haven't already.

Hi carrie,

Do you know how far back in time you have your dutch ancestors? I tried to find them on your tree but must have missed them. Does it go back all the way back to New England in the 1600's? I always love to welcome new members but I don't know if it would help you in any way. Have you thought about joining the New Netherlads Settlers Project?( I could be totally wrong about the way you connect to the Netherlands). For help to find your Dutch connection you can always post a question on G2G. You don't have to be a member of the project for it. With the right tags the right people will see it and help you. The Netherlands Project is all about profiles of people who lived in the Netherlands  and as long as you haven't found the connection you'll better start closer to home and work back in time.

Maybe you could provide some more information?

You're probably correct about the New Netherlands Settlers. I show the last name of Ryckman in New York in the late 1600's.

Dear all,

I'd like to join the Netherlands Project. My name is Klaas Lievens. I've been digging for my ancestors and all that are somehow connected, in the broadest sense. My father, started the hobby in the time when it all was on paper. I inherited the stacks of files and started to digitalize some 20 years ago. By now I have collected data of almost 56.000 persons. My roots are in Zeeland and most of the data are from there, but there are branches to America, Australia, and some other countries.
At the moment I'm entering in Wikitree data of persons killed in the bombing of Westkapelle on 3 Oct 1944 and their ancestors. Haven't entered any of my personal details yet, but will do so later on. Thinking about entering data of persons killed during the floods of 1953 later.
I'm a Dutch speaker, but saw most correspondence here was in English, so did that too.

Best regards.
Klaas.
by G2G-6 (6.6k points)

Hoi Klaas,

Wikitree is inderdaad even wennen, maar de aanhouder wint, zegt men.
Dank je wel voor de badge.

Mvg
Klaas

Hoi Klaas,

Mvg
Klaas.

My research into the Fridsma family has led me to Dirk Jans and Jeltje Fridses, who were married on Jan 5, 1703 in Eernewoude, Friesland. My research into my ancestors in the Pruiksma and De Haan family has led me to Romcke Peterz and Geyske Crijns(dr), and Rudolph Willemse (Rudolphi).

Hi Steven, welcome to the Netherlands project. I hope you will feel 'at home' with us. I've checked some profiles of you and see some beautiful family stories. And maybe we can learn you something about the Dutch Archives. They are very easy accessible (and sometimes also in English). Because I've noticed that you have some sources but they are not always official sources. For Friesland you can check for example Wiewaswie.nl or Allefriezen.nl those official archives are free accessible on line.

If you have questions please feel free to ask.

Hi Steven,

I gave you the profilebadge. I noticed you already got the Netherlands tags. Great work!!. I f you want you can join th project on discord on the Wikitree server. There's is always a lively discussion going on and it is easy to ask questions ther. If you prefer the G2G-forum that's also a good source for information. If you have questions, just ask them and add the Netherlands tag. We are refurbishing the dutch Help-pages where you can find the specifics about names in the Netherlands (no middle names, no married names for women in official papers and on wikitree, etc)

enjoy WikiTree!!!

Hallo,
