The Database Errors project flags as an error "Virginia, USA" and "Virginia, United States" when in conjunction with dates prior to July 4, 1776 and provides in the error report (under Info):
Virginia, USA -> Colony of Virginia
Please include the url https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Virginia_Place_Names in your explanation when you make this change.

- add location categories, to include both Virginia and West Virginia county categories (for known counties). See county information here.
First, what to call her when:
- Colony of Virginia, America >before June 29, 1776
- Commonwealth of Virginia, America >June 29, 1776 to before June 25, 1788
- Commonwealth of Virginia, United States of America >June 25, 1788 - before April 17, 1861
- Commonwealth of Virginia, Confederate States of America > April 17, 1861 - April 9, 1865
- Commonwealth of Virginia > after April 9, 1865 - before March 2, 1867
- Commonwealth of Virginia, First Military District (Reconstruction Era, USA) > March 2, 1867 - before January 16, 1870
- Commonwealth of Virginia, United States of America > January 16, 1870 -
Note: Unless a location name is clearly wrong, it should be at the discretion of the profile manager (or the project, if it's a PPP) whether it is Virginia, or Virginia Colony, British North America, etc. It should not be something that other people go in and change.
The ultimate rule in WikiTree is to "use what the persons themselves would have used at the time of the event." The longer ago that time was, the more likely that will be unknowable, which is why it should be left to the discretion of the profile manager(s) when clear proof is not available.
Next: What goes before "Colony of" or "Commonwealth of" Virginia?
Include "Parish" or "County" when adding to a Virginia location. This is important because many early Virginia parishes and counties had the same name. See (known) existing parish & county categories listed under Category:Virginia Parishes (parishes) and Category:Virginia Colony / Category:Virginia (counties). See also the [table on this Virginia project page]. Please add relevant location categories when editing Virginia profiles. Note that the categories use only Virginia or Virginia Colony. If you want to create a category, first please check with [Virginia Project] or [US Southern Colonies Project], and note that new Parish categories should not include a county name. Also, we are currently not creating additional Virginia Colony county categories, but we can certainly discuss that if you feel one is needed.
Thanks!
