Alexis Clare Lovelace was born in Wichita, Kansas on 10 October 1945. Alexis is the daughter of Clare Alexander “Chick” and Clarice Marvin Lovelace. Chick Lovelace was killed in action in WWII, and Alexis was raised by her mother with help from her grandmothers, Pearl McCleery Lovelace and Nellie Long Marvin. Alexis lived in Enid, Oklahoma as a small child and grew up in Oklahoma City where she attended Northwest Classen and graduated from Putnam City High School in 1963.

Alexis’s mother began fighting breast cancer during the summer of 1963, and she died on 20 Jun 1966. This was a devastating time for Alexis, especially since her two grandmother’s were not doing well.

Alexis Clare Lovelace '63

Alexis graduated from Oklahoma University with a B.S. in Art and English Education in 1967. While at Oklahoma University she served on the Student Senate and did the publicity for the engineering school. She was active in the Art Committee and her sorority Alpha Phi. It was there at O.U. that she met Mike Nelson at a Kappa Sigma fraternity party.

Mike Nelson and Alexis were married on 27 Dec 1966 at St. John's Methodist Church, Oklahoma City in an ice storm. Alexis and Mike moved to Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where Alexis did post graduate work at Northeastern University.

Alexis and her husband moved to Valdosta, Georgia, and he became an Air Force pilot. Alexis volunteered teaching art classes in the Officers Club. They then moved to Warner Robins, Georgia, where Alexis gave birth to a baby girl, Michelle. They moved to Burkburnett, Texas in 1970. Then Alexis and Michelle, who was one year old, moved to Oklahoma City while Mike Nelson flew a rescue helicopter in Vietnam. They then moved to Enid for two years and then to Yorba Linda, California, where she had her second baby, a boy named Mitchell, in 1973. They then moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1977.

Alexis has been involved in working in her husband’s optometry office and the Muskogee community and her church. She held several offices in PTA, was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, member of the League of Women Voters, on the board of Perspectives Women’s Resource Center, a lifetime member of Service League of Muskogee, board member of Eastern Oklahoma Spelling Bee, head of Joy of Giving Shoppe, a Deacon and Elder at the Presbyterian Church, and an officer in Muskogee Indian Territory Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

Alexis has traveled throughout the United States and to twenty five foreign countries and islands in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and English Channel.

Her teaching experience has been as a part time General Educational Development teacher for adults, GED, at Georgia Pacific and Blvd. Christian Church; however, her long time GED teaching was at Grace Episcopal Church where she and Virginia Lipotich taught together 28 years. They had over 550 students complete the program and receive a State of Oklahoma High School Diploma. Alexis started teaching GED, as a volunteer in January 2012 at Muskogee County Jail, and she spendt eight years each Wednesday afternoon there. The shut down for Covid 19 in 2020 causes her to have to discontinue these classes.

I like being part of DAR, as we are involved in various patriotic projects. Our DAR chapter is involved in the Naturalization Ceremonies at our local Federal Court House, and we provide a reception for our new citizens. We also help put out flags and wreaths at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery. I coordinate the Joy of Giving Shopping in cooperation with my church and the Salvation Army, and I also coordinate a Veterinarians Christmas Luncheon with the Salvation Army and DAR. I enjoy being active in my church and my community, and I am excited about the work I have been doing on genealogy.

WikiTree has been a really great experience for me, as I joined in March 2017 without much knowledge. I was so excited when my grandmother, Pearl McCleery won photo of the week, and I even cried tears of joy when she won 2018 photo of the year. The trophy Eowyn Langholf sent has a special place in my dining room. I am still a beginner, but I am gradually getting better with the kind help at WikiTree. The friendships I have made on WikiTree have made an amazing difference in my life.

Family is everything
It defines you–the heart of your spirit, the heritage of your smile, not only the color of your eyes but how they see the world. You are bound by kinship
You add your own link to the chain, and that is where you strengthen or weaken what you have been blessed–or burdened—with.
That is where you use the indefinable quality that belongs to only you, the bit of uniqueness you pass on to your children for good or bad, the part of you that will always be separate from those who share your name, your blood, and your past.

Hello, 4th cousin 7 times removed! Our closest connection is through Lydia Ophelia (Birchard) Pickett (1802-abt.1883), daughter of Darius Dewey Birchard (1804-1871). You recently made a change to her relationships.

You might find this interesting - I posted this handwritten copy of the Birchard genealogy from the late 1800's made by Dwight Darius Birchard (1831-1905).

https://researchgeni.blogspot.com/2018/03/birchard-family-history-selected.html

Dwight Birchard collected all the information about that branch of the family. I think a cousin Nathan was also working on their genealogy and it may have ended up in a published genealogy.

Anyway, glad to find someone else interested in the Birchards, even if we are not closely related!

Alexis.....thank you for the corrections on Inman-342. Great job. Thank you. I also want to note that my records indicate another child of Abednego and Mary Ritchie...that being Mary W. Alexis, Thank you for your reply to my previous email. I believe you indicated you did not add anything to the biography of Abednego Hardin Inman. Your reply was very interesting regarding the DAR data. I would be very interested in pursuing more information in that regards as well. There is a Shadrach Inman that was the hero of the Battle of Musgrove's Mill, one of the pivotal battles in the Revolutionary War. It was fought shortly before King's Mountain. Abednego Inman had a brother by the name of Shadrach Inman but it does not appear this is the Shadrach at Musgrove's Mill. The name Shadrach was carried down through many generations of Inman's and so it could be that the Shadrach of Musgrove's Mill fame was cousin to the Shadrach Inman of Cocke county, Tennessee. Perhaps data from the DAR archives would help sort this out.

By the way, I have sent a message to others who changed the Biography of Abednego Inman and I am waiting to hear from them. I sent a message to the person that create Inman-342, and so I hope that person will reply to my question.

cheers,

Joe Inman

posted by Joe Inman Jr
Ms. Nelson, I am trying to determine the source of the biography for Abednego Hardin Inman (Inman-342). It is a bit confusing because the text after noting Abednego's spouse reads: Andrew Henderson, Elizabeth's grandfather, was also a Revolutionary soldier. He was a direct descendant of Margaret Bruce of Scotland, who married William Henderson in 1705.[1]

Andrew Henderson married Agnes Keys, daughter of John Keys of Augusta County, Va.

I have no idea who the Henderson's are or who Elizabeth is in this text. My DNA indicates 31% Scottish and yet as far as I can determine there is no Scottish connection in my family tree. Is Margaret Bruce that connection? Perhaps, but how is she connected?

Thanks in advance for your help on this.

You really are a treasure

Hi, Alexis!

Thank you for your participation in October’s 2020 Source-a-thon. Your contributions helped us to clear over 57,000 profiles that needed sourcing. This makes our Shared Tree all that much better.

Keep up the great work!
